Embedding that video warrants me telling you about a little mishap here at work. As you may have heard in my many tirades, this is one of several campuses owned by this University. Most of our web filtering and stuff happens at HQ and they monitor staff, faculty, and student usage to know where most of our bandwidth is going. They don't actually monitor anybody but every night the Barracuda generates a report for their perusal that gives them a traffic summary indicating the most frequented sites and who went to them. It's a crappy report tbh, but it gets the job done. "Lesser" IT staff are also subject to scrutiny.

I got notified by the director of IT at our campus that my name came up on the bandwidth report last night at HQ for spending an unspecified but excessive amount of time on Youtube yesterday. Funny thing is I can't remember looking up anything on Youtube yesterday. He said that the numbers were pretty small (a few megabytes), and that people and activities that are worse bandwidth hogs get overlooked all the time. It's not a big deal, just an interesting oddity that came up today.

I responded to the report with this:

My internet is unfettered at work, we're just expected not to use an excessive amount of bandwidth. That's not a problem as I often get after people for doing things that slow the network to a crawl. There's so much legit traffic anyway that there's none to spare on shenanigans. On days when there aren't any students in the building I'm free to do whatever I want as there's almost nothing else going on in the building. Last summer, the students had a week off. I spent that whole week cruising Youtube while playing games on Steam and torrenting anime.

Our campus has had some unusual bandwidth issues as of the past month. The network has been overburdened most of the time with an inexplicable spike in CPU usage and network traffic on one of our DCs in the early morning. We've yet to determine the cause, and even logging into a workstation takes a user an average of five minutes. But that's just our issues with the LAN. Our WAN link is 10MBs as allotted from an interstitial campus between here and HQ. Inadequate these days. We're looking to switch ISPs and double it to 20 for less than half the cost, and that's moving from copper to fiber. Verizon sucks. Then again, so does CenturyLink, the company we'll be switching to. At least they're cheaper.
