NIGEL ADKINS has unveiled his two newest signings for Southampton's Premier League return. They are two free transfers - Owen Hargreaves and Craig Gordon.

Owen Hargreaves arrived in the Premier League with Manchester United, surrounded by a lot of hype. His talent had been shown across the world in many major competitions but he was unfortunate with injuries. United released him after a four year spell with only four appearences. He was picked up by neighbours City but was let go after this past season.

Scot international Craig Gordon shone in the Scottish Premier League and was brought over to England with Sunderland. He displayed amazing reflexes - even making the best save in the Premier League's twenty year history - but was unfortunate with injuries and was released this pre-season.

Manager Adkins said:


"These are two of the finest talent's in Britain. Both Hargreaves and Gordon have been unlucky with injuries but a new start will be good for them. They have the talent to help us stay in this league, exactly what we intend to do. Getting both of these men on a free is a major coup and I am excited about what they bring to the table."


Gordon and Hargreaves join Jay Rodriguez as Saint's signings so far in the summer.

Officials at Sheffield Wednesday football club have today confirmed the club will play three games in a tour to Portugal. Sheffield Wednesday's first opponents will be midfielder and PFA player of the year, Jose Semedo's old club Sporting. The second team The Owls will line up against is Rio Ave F.C whom finished 14th in the Portuguese league last season. Finally they will square up to Premier League newcomers Reading in a match on the 16th July. Sheffield Wednesday have a good link between the two clubs and are looking forward to seeing how many fans turn up to see their team take on three reputable teams in sunny Portugal. Manager Dave Jones said he would like to have got his squad sorted for his first full season in the Championship with his new club before they jet off to Portugal as he thinks they will bond better on this tour. Dave Jones has also placed Daniel Jones, Mike Jones, Chris O'Grady and Rob Jones on the transfer list and has made Cecil Nyoni and Aaron Jameson available for loan.

Reporter: Hello Milan, hello Dave, first of all Milan what was your reaction to gaining promotion?

Milan Mandaric: I was delighted. We had a great last two months since Dave joined and we didn't lose which was great. Now we are here in the Championship i hope we can compete and do well this coming season.

Reporter: Speaking of Dave Jones' arrival, how hard was it to make the decision to sack Gary Megson even when you were third in League One?

Milan Mandaric: It was very difficult. We were third and had just won against our rivals. However, i felt results before this were not good enough so i decided we needed a change and i am happy Dave has repaid my faith in him by gaining promotion.

Reporter: Thanks for that insight Milan. Dave, you won two manager of the months in your first two month as long as gaining promotion. How do you feel?

Dave Jones: It was great. I couldn't say no to the job offer as Sheffield Wednesday are a massive club and are a team on the up. At first i thought we would be looking at the play offs but to get automatic just was amazing.

Reporter: You've already signed Joe Mattock, Chris Kirkland, Kieran Lee and almost Anthony Gardner. Will there be any more deals?

Dave Jones: Yes, Anthony has passed his medical today and should sign soon and we have 4 or 5 other players who we are looking to bring in to the club and we are also trying to move players out to raise funds for others.

Reporter: Moving on, Gary Madine's off field problems have caught up with him again and he will be in court soon. How do you want to cope with his behaviour?

Dave Jones: That was almost a year ago and his behaviour has come on greatly since i have been here. He is really getting his head down and working hard. He is going to be a key player this year and we need him to be good.

Reporter: Okay, thank you for your time Milan and Dave, good luck in the Championship.

Astbury Story of the Fortnight was stopped because A) no-one was voting and B) there were a real lack of stories at that time. The two most recent fortnights had 2 and 3 people, respectively, vote. You didn't vote in any fortnight, if you want things to keep going, you, obviously amongst others - I'm not picking on you here, need to keep them afloat. I'm more than happy to have a story of the fortnight competition but I don't see why people should bother writing their stories, me nominating them for an award and then no-one voting to decide the winner. It defeats the object of having a competition.

I'd like to reiterate that this isn't a personal jab at you. Another point I'd like to make is that for people running forum participation games, competitions etc. it takes a lot of their time to make it happen and there is no thanks for doing it but there is always outrage when something doesn't happen the minute someone says it will. It really annoys me.

Basically, if people want SOTF running again I'll do it but if there isn't enough interest then there is no point.

The first thing I have to say is that I completely agree with the bolded parts, and see why you stopped SOTF due to lack of interest.

However, I feel that their was a lot of interest in the competition until the Draft League begun (or is it began?). Now that has gone I think demand would be high again.

joseph_s i wouldn't class it as cheating as it's your game mode and it's not like your making them 99 overall.

Today, West Brom have announced that the club have signed Pheonix Caine on a 1 year deal. Pheonix Caine has been given £11 million to improve the team in order to stay up in the premier league.

"I've been given £11 million pounds to improve such a wonderful club and I do intend to spend all of it on a couple of top class players which will boost this team siginificantly. I look forward to meeting the players and also the team, I will win many trophies at this club and i aim to make them one of the most successful clubs in europe."

SOUTHAMPTON will be well prepared for the Premier League season after it was announced they would be playing against two teams from one of the best leagues in the world, the La Liga/Liga BBVA, in Spain itself. 

They will fly out and their first opponents will be Levante UD. They will then be matched up against relegation fighting Serie A side Cesena before they lastly play against Granada CF.

Nigel Adkins said it would be a 'big test' but he was happy the club could organise it as it would be 'excellent preparation for the season ahead'.

Southampton will also hold an open training session in Barcelona.

This news comes with the extention of Iago Falque's loan from Tottenham Hotspur FC for another season.

Falque is excited by the prospect of going home for pre-season, saying he hopes he can use these games to 'raise the likelihood of an international cap' and achieve 'his dream of Spain internationals'.
