I wouldn't mind Nintendo experimenting with a 3D platformer/multiplayer brawler, which is basically what you're talking about. It just wouldn't/shouldn't be "Smash Bros." Smash is its own thing and I don't want it to stray from its core as much as a move to 3D would entail, since the battle system would have to be completely revamped (and simplified) to work in a 3D platformer world. For one thing it would be incredibly hard to aim a multitude of physical attacks against moving targets, especially jumping targets, in a 3D world, which is why you see most 3D multiplayer games revolving around locking on and shooting things. I think Kid Icarus Uprising was a very apt comparison.
