Halo NeoWiki Discussion

Alright guys, let's get a jump start on this Wiki. If we add the information as it comes, it will be both easier to do, and also give us an edge over the competition.

Use this thread for any questions, concerns, or suggestions relating to the Halo Wiki.

Basics of Editing

Let's do a rundown on some of the basics you'll need to edit. Don't be afraid, it's quite simple once you get the hang of it!

Getting Started

Click the link to the Halo Wiki above. To choose an article to start editing, simply search for it using the search field. If the article you want to edit doesn't already have a page, it will give you the option to create it. Just make sure the page wasn't simply titled differently than what you typed-in.

Once you've reached the page you want to edit, simply click the "Edit" button in the top-right corner of the page to begin editing. Most editing is simply typing the information you want to contribute into the edit field, but there are some things related to formatting you should know...

Creating Page Sections

Sections can be created within a page by surrounding the title of the section in a certain amount of equals signs ( = ). The less amount there are surrounding the title, the higher tier of section it is (and consequently, the larger size font it uses).

For example:



"Characters" becomes a major section because of the two equals marks surrounding it. "Humans" and "Covenant" become subsections of "Characters" because they are placed under "Characters" and have three equals marks on each side of the title, rather than two. If we wanted, we could even make subsections under "Humans" or "Covenant" by using four equals signs on each side.

The title of the page itself is assumed to be the highest tier (one equals sign on each side). Thus, any sections you create under it should start with two equals signs on each side, rather than one. The sections are automatically shown within the page's table of contents once there are enough sections created.

Linking

Linking is very simple! If I wanted both the link name and the link destination to be "Halo 3", for example, then I would simply put:



Now the user will be linked to the Halo 3 page when he clicks on the link.

If we want the link name to be different, then we do this:



This will make the link show the text "third game", but link to the page for Halo 3.

Linking offsite is done like so:



This only uses one bracket on each side. The first thing listed is the URL and the second is the link name. There is no bracket in-between like the other one.

Bulk edit If you weren't around/didn't hear about it, I won a competition on Neo for most info updated in about a 2 month space and got Reach Legendary Edition for free because of it. You don't need to know how to make it pretty if you don't want to. You can pick a page and just add details or stuff that's missing/wrong at first.

When you get past that, you'll easily pick up the stuff you need to make it look good. Tbh, the wiki does a lot of it itself. Like headers. If you do something like this:

The wiki will automatically format it to realise that "Part 1/2/3" are sub headers of "Level 1" and "Mini Boss Battle" is a sup header of Part 3, then it'll make up a quick link box at the top of the page. Simples.

I'm the only staff atm, but I haven't done some stuff for a while. I'll pick it up soon when more information for the games came out and when year 12 finishes.

I think the pale green background is annoying to look at, personally. The green theme on the main page isn't very pleasant on the eyes. Why not make the background blend in with the "halo - neoseeker" logo?

Instead of the darker green, try 1A0E03. Instead of the lighter green, try either 563921 or AC7339. If you add these colors you'll have to make the font on all content pages a brighter color, probably white.

Oh my, that's what you got from the codes I gave you? I apologize, I used a tool that I found online to find out Hex codes for different colors. Those definitely are not the colors I had in mind. I'd try again but I'm at the library right now.

Maybe you can try doing what I was thinking? By that I mean find out what the Hex codes are for colors found within the "Halo - Neoseeker" logo at the top of the page and apply them. What I had in mind was a pretty deep, dark blue for the background (dark green) and then a slightly lighter blue (similar to the color of the search bar or even a bit like the drop down menu, or even somewhere between!) to replace the lighter green.

Do you see what I'm getting at?
