Previously, the mode, which removes protagonist Agent 47′s Instinct feature, as well as removing the HUD entirely, had been announced as a component that players had to unlock if they were to access it. However, an admin on the game's official forum stressed that it "seems voicing your concern helps from time to time" as developer IO Interactive decided to unlock the Purist mode from the get go.
