In all fairness, it took quite a few months, but eventually I gave up on Spiral Knights. I don't regret my time playing the game or even paying for an elevator pass when they first appeared. This game gave me hours upon hours of enjoyment where I could join random parties and delve into the Clockworks. I even dabbled in the insane difficulties of the Shadow Lairs and got myself a few accessories and set up a number of loadouts tailored to specific tasks. But now I have no desire to continue playing.
The problem largely stems from the lack of actual playable content. Even checking out the news still from the game, it seems like content now is largely restricted to decorative stuff. Sure, Sonic themed costumes/accessories are nice, featured auctions offering stuff like the scissor blades helped the ingame economy and it was nice seeing the game get into the festive spirit with santa hats on almost everything.
But where's the long lasting playable new content? Aside from a token few lockdown maps (one of which looks rather poorly designed) there hasn't been a whole lot and I can't remember the last
good one since the Roarmulus Twins were added. Candlestick Keep is a horrible mess that is frustrating even to parties that know what they are doing and outright lethal if you're with inexperienced players. Shadow Lairs did nothing but bring slight rearrangements of existing boss stages, but with an insane difficulty spike, loads of lag and a high price point just for entry. The latest one I recall was the addition of a number of extra areas in various stages designed to give a little insight into the backstory, but most of these are boring and over in about 5 seconds.
It's not REAL content. It's clear a lot of money is being paid into the game when the energy market can be so strong and it's disappointing that for all intents and purposes it is pretty much the same game it has been since Roarmulus. Unless they plan on providing content that is fresh, playable and worthwhile then I guess I'm done with Spiral Knights. It was fun while it lasted but I can only play the same stages for so long before I tire and wish to look elsewhere.
