Trion Worlds, the folk behind Rift and Defiance, have unveiled a surprise project today titled Trove. Trove is an online multiplayer RPG that is oddly familiar, in that it looks a whole lot like indie game Cube World. That is, it's a voxel-based online RPG with constructible/destructible environments where each world is entirely randomly generated. Oh, and best yet, it's free-to-play.
It seems from the announcement trailer below that the focus of the won't be on what you create, like Minecraft, but rather on the adventuring taking place in the world. Exploring, digging, finding and fighting monsters, creating weapons and armor and finding loot in general. Again, this is rather more in line with the Cube World experience.
Beginning today Trion is accepting signups for Trove's alpha, which is said to allow players to help create content used in the game's future. Alpha players can even build various things outside of the game and then import the work in later. Getting a little EverQuest Next and Landmark here, aren't we? Well, at least they're solid ideas, even if they're not entirely original.
Sign up for Trove's alpha over at the official website as you please.
