Several outlets were able to get their hands on Valve's upcoming Steam Machine prototype over the past week. While no one was really able to try any particular demos or give the machine a spin on their own, let alone get Valve to spill any more beans, they did get photos. That means we get our first look at Valve's Steam Machine! At least, this is the prototype version they're shipping out to 300 people to test out. Probably never going to reach the greater public, unfortunately.
As would be expected, the box looks rather simple. Considering it's just a prototype, the Steam Machine comes in a rather standard square shape in order to best allow the space needed for the system's hardware. No custom designed bits and pieces inside, just straight up raw power. However, the console does have a fancy LED circle thing on the front which seems to glow. The picture doesn't really capture that.
It's also great to see Valve's controller prototypes. They've mentioned before how they've tried out track balls, but seeing the actual pieces in a controller is a rather unique point of view. What some of those other controllers are supposed to be... well, some questions are better left unanswered.
Valve's Steam Machine prototype photos come care of the Seattle Times. Hopefully they boxes will ship out to their respective testers soon so we can start hearing about initial impressions. Then, hopefully we'll hear about third-party retail versions of the Steam Machine!
