The Creative Assembly, developers of such complex and inspiring strategy titles as Total War: Rome II and Stormrise, announced today they were working on a, err, free-to-play RTS and MOBA hybrid. Named Total War: Arena, the game will be an online-only experience allowing players to battle history's greatest generals and their armies against one another. Err... RTS/MOBA?
Nevermind that there have been what feels like a billion other free-to-play MOBAs announced over the past week, including games from DC Comics and Turbine, Paradox and the Magicka crew, and a few other small developers. Nevermind that The Creative Assembly has put out oddball titles like Viking: Battle for Asguard before. People love the Total War franchise for what it is... going free-to-play and changing the game seems inherently risky.
Yet Creative Assembly has come this far, it's too late to back down now. Sign up for the Total War: Arena beta now at the official website. Is this the Total War that people really want to play?
