Even England's The Times is delving into breaking console news from unverified sources these days. Come on, industry, can't you at least leak your information to the gaming media anymore? Anyways, the new rumor is that Sony is considering a £300 price point for their next-gen PlayStation. Considering prices in the UK are either equal to or greater than prices in North America, we could be seeing a $300 or lower price for the console.
According to The Times, a source leaked to them several "internal documents" which referenced the price, which comes considerably lower than the PlayStation 3's $500-$600 range of SKUs. Of course, I'll go out of my way again to reiterate these are rumors of the most speculative degree. Not only does The Times point out that Sony is only "considering" this price, but it's rather unlikely that Sony will announce the price at all for months -- even if they do reveal their console this Wednesday.
That said, $300 seems like the sweet spot for console pricing right now. Such a price would put the next PlayStation in favorable position going up against a likely similarly priced next-gen Xbox this holiday season. Of course, if either console could drop it down to $250 or even $200... then we might have a console war on our hands. Yeehaw, an old fashioned console war!
