The unfortunate demise of THQ left many of its studios and franchises with new owners, however there were some curious omissions. Vigil Games, creators of the Darksiders franchise, didn't receive any bids, while the Homeworld franchise wasn't even mentioned. Homeworld's original developer, Relic, went to SEGA, but it wasn't included due to its "legacy" status. One studio wants to do something about that, as teamPixel is looking to buy the Homeworld franchise with the help of the fans.

TeamPixel has turned to IndieGoGo, a crowd-funding website, to raise the necessary funds to buy Homeworld at an auction of legacy franchises. If successful, gamers would be able to get Homeworld released on Steam and GOG, a version called Homeworld Touch for touchscreen devices, and, this is the big one, Homeworld 3 at long last. TeamPixel is asking for $50,000 on IndieGoGo to make the dream a reality, but some additional stretch goals up the ante even further.

If $100,000 is reached, teamPixel will release Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm, and Homeworld 2 for free on Steam and GOG. At the $250,000 stretch goal, Homeworld Classic appears on the Apple App Store and Google Play for free for the first month. The $500,000 goal means Homeworld: Cataclysm and Homeworld 2 would potentially get the touchscreen treatment, while $750,000 means a free copy of Homeworld 3 to every contributor.

Those are some pretty ambitious goals for a much-loved franchise, but the initial $50,000 goal should be easy to reach. Funding ends on February 6 at 11:59pm PST, and is currently at a little under $4,000. If teamPixel is unable to secure the Homeworld franchise, all the money raised gets refunded to the contributors. TeamPixel is fairly new to the indie scene, but if it can bring back Homeworld then the entrance would be monumental.
