Played it a bit long time ago, it has a Demo on Steam.

It's $15/mo USD, same as WoW. It's possible to run the cost through your in-game currency, but it would take a few months at least of shooting straight for a sustainable force of income that high in order to set that up.

The game is very strategy-heavy, and entirely PvP focus. Here's a battle I found via google. The strong points of EVE are:

• Incredibly deep customization
• Player-economy. No NPC shops, it's completely players.
• Open-ended, do what you want

It has no real sense of "progression", no end-game, this is a persistent open world, with corps (guilds) taking over sections of fringe space and creating bases, in order to establish their dominance and reap the resources within. This game will get boring fast if you don't find a corp, as being part of a bigger group trying to do something bigger is kind of...the point.

It's a fantastic game, and the dev team, CCP, love what they do, but it's a game that is not for everybody. It's full of theorycrafting, flowcharts, if WoW is for teenagers, college students, etc, this game is a Businessman's game. It requires thought, it is not easy.

The in-game chat is pretty robust, there's a newbie chat for help & questions, the normal area/local, guild, etc, group chats, the usual fare.
