Valve's expansion of Steam into non-gaming software has begun today, as a suite of creative tools is now available for purchase on their storefront. The software titles include DirectX 10/11 testing packages, and tools for painting/drawing, 3D modeling, and photo editing. To celebrate the event, each of the titles is 10% off for the first week of availability. The new, expanded platform is aptly named "Beyond Games," comfortably reminding users that Steam is still all about games, but also... beyond.
Here's the official list of the software Valve released today:
- ArtRage Studio Pro
- CameraBag 2
- GameMaker: Studio
- 3DMark Vantage
- 3DMark 11
Valve wants to point out that "many" of these programs includes Steamworks features like saving to the cloud and automatic updating, thought this is mostly notable because Valve doesn't state "all". Make sure to check each product before purchase to see what Steamworks features are included. GameMaker, however, goes above and beyond and allows users to share their work via Steam.
Further software releases have yet to be announced, and the front page for Beyond Games doesn't even feature a tab for "Coming Soon," yet. Expect more, likely soon, as Steam's Greenlight project gets up to full speed.
