Yume Nikki

quote http://starmen.net/forum/?t=msg&th=45107
A while back... or, more like a few years back, some crazy Japanese freeware developer decided it would be a great idea to creep everyone out. Finally it's seemed to have gotten translated, which really wasn't all that much of an improvement or necessity, as all that you really read is menus and item names.

The premise of the game is simple, for those curious. You play as a girl who dreams. And in these dreams, things happen. Bizzare things happen. Think Silent Hill meets Earthbound, as it's quirky but with some really dark humour and elements of oddity that you won't find anywhere else. The Object is to collect all 25 of the "Effects" that lay scattered about the deamscape. Some seem almost purely cosmetic, while others are necissary to continue or gain others. There's no dialog, no hints, no narratives, nothing. Just you exploring some dreams.
I've been playing this for a bit now, and it's a lot of fun. It's designed to mess with your head- there are subtle audio changes, and it's very bizarre and unpredictable. Not sure what else to say about it, but it's definitely worth downloading.

Gameplay video for those curious-

It takes a bit of effort to get the game working, and I'm not sure how to get it working on Macintosh/Linux/Solaris/etc, just Windows.
Download Link (or avoid Rapidshare and download from this Mediafire mirror)
You need WinRAR or 7zip to open the file. The download should have two folders and an exe. First, you need support "Support for East Asian Languages" installed into Windows. You need an OS disc (or the file off of it from somewhere..) to do this, and then find the option in Control Panel->Regional and Language Settings. Installing these doesn't affect your current language settings at all, just installs support for the characters.

Then you need to run the installer and game with a program called Microsoft AppLocale. It's a free utility you can get from Microsoft's website, or in that download. It allows you to run programs under another regional setting without changing it for your entire computer. Unless you run Windows in Japanese, you need to install this to play. It's pretty useful anyway, and takes up no space.

When AppLocale is installed, you need to rename the files so a non-Japanese OS can read them. You need to rename both of the folders inside and the game .exe. Doesn't matter what they're named. The installer of the modified RPG Maker 2003 runtime is in the folder with "2003RTP" somewhere in the name. Run that installer with AppLocale set to Japanese (日本語 - near the bottom of the list).

Then just run the renamed game exe with AppLocale (in Japanese) to play it. There's an option in AppLocale to make a shortcut, ticking that may make it easier. The shortcut will appear in the Microsoft AppLocale folder in the start menu.

Yeah, that took a while to type up. Hope somebody here enjoys this game.

re: Yume Nikki

Thanks. I'll try it now. Oh, it's a game made with RPG Maker, nice I still mess around with that program from time to time.

Edit: I can't download the file, they had to put stupid cats in the letters and I can't get the verification code wrong. I guess I'm cat-blind.

Edit2: Downloading now

Yeah, it took me six tries to download that file, I hate Rapidshare's new verification. Only needed it to test it was the right one, too.

Thanks for supplying the link, I'll definitely check it out.

Edit: Took me 3 tries....*bleep* rapidshare.

re: Yume Nikki

This game becomes a bit boring when you have to wander around and you can't find the way which is most of the time. But I did have a dream about it last night after playing... disturbing...

re: Yume Nikki

I didn't like the ending much.

There's also an English version that's simpler to install than your version.

This is the English version he linked us too. It worked for me without downloading anything additional.
