In this ‘opinion piece’, some guy who doesn’t like these sort of games sucks at them and whines about sucking at them.

Seriously, I’m all for people having their personal preferences for games, but the only ‘personal preferences’ involved here are “I want a game that’s super easy and obvious”.

This game certainly isn’t perfect, I have my own issues with this game. However, Stretch….You just don’t seem to like games that will break you if you’re careless. Red Dead Redemption is great. So is Bioshock. Prototype 1 is a fun (but tough) game too. I haven’t played 2 yet (waiting for the PC release). The game is tough at times, but that just makes the successes all the more worthwhile (I felt great running around at night, getting ambushed by a chimera and surviving).

From what I gathered from your writing…

You had no idea RB(R1)/LB(L1) did anything at all. Of course the game would suck (as a mage in particular) if all you ever did was the non-skill attacks (the mage comes with Ingle [fireball] and Levin [lightning]). Not too far into the game the mage unlocks Comestion, a wall of friggen flame that knocks smaller enemies in the air and unsteadies larger ones often. It’s great for taking out a row of enemies, using them on bosses/minibosses (Griffons and Chimeras especially hate fire) often proves useful as well. Comestion is my go-to mage’s attack in dungeons and the like, since it’s casting time isn’t too much longer than high ingele (multi fireball blasts).

I never had much of a problem with Chimeras myself, they’re actually really weak with mages in particular. Spam Comestion a few times and they’ll die pretty fast. If you get the first strike there is a good chance they’ll never touch you. Griffons are actually the easiest for mages (or me at least) to kill of all the mini-bosses, save for the cyclops you can find a bit past the encampment that can be obliterated with a single Maelstrom attack (with plenty of remaining charge in the attack to spare).

Oh yeah, speaking of which. Maelstrom is a crazy useful crowd control magic skill for sorcerers (advanced magic class). Longest casting time (and leaves you vulnerable for a while after casting), but it sucks up any smaller enemies in the vicinity and knocks them around like rag dolls. I’ve yet to meet a bandit that can take a maelstrom and survive. Let alone HIGH Maelstrom which is bigger and stronger. It’s quite easy to take care of groups if you know where they are hanging out (Saurians by the river, bandits in camps and such, and the goblins by the mouth of the pass, etc).

Another awesome magic skill…Bolide. That’s meteors to you. It’s not very accurate, but there are multiple projectiles. It obliterates any weakling it hits near, and does a fair amount of damage (and often makes fall, or at least unsteadies) mini-boss level characters.

Yes, the game can be cheap (I’ve been one shotted by a bandit archer myself) and it sucks, but the game is supposed to be tough and you should know that going in. I also get tired of taking on the same groups of weaklings, though again maelstrom makes short work of those. Currently my arisen is a magic archer (previously a strider, and previously a sorcerer as mentioned).

I’ve written all this, and I seriously doubt it’ll make you consider changing your stance on this game. I just thought I’d try though.
