I noticed this as well, I did the same as you, but only one or two things were added after I did a quest or two. I am post game now and still not much had been added (and I found that cyclops sigil hammer in the everfell, seems to be giving me everything I don't want XD). I'm thinking of putting on Allure and trying to charm him into giving me better stuff.

Allure is an augment for the Magick Archer you get at rank 7 I think. It increases affinity with NPCs that you give items to. I found out that if you get a shopkeeper to like you enough, not only do you get discounts, you get acess to rarer weapons and armour. I kinda found that out with a travelling salesman I always gave ale to whenever I passed by him. instead of his usual rant he said something like "you've been a good friend, I've been keeping these aside for someone else, but I think you'll need it more than he. take a look." and got a nice chestpeice for my ranger. I plan on charming every shopkeeper I know tonight to see what I can get.

Also, have you actually come across 'travelling' merchants? The only ones I've found are at the various encampments, none that were actually on the road.

Same with me. I've never come across any travelling merchants that were actually travelling anywhere.
