I tried to drum up interest in my usual rpg gamer buddies and out of 12 people only one other person want to play it and 8 of them have no interest at all. Is it because of capcom dev? Is the combat so involved that people are put off by proof of story? It could be lack of Coop, but these same people are fans of Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy.. etc.

Just in that circle of gamers, it seems like they cry for something different but turn away when something comes along.

It's probably just the way they chose to present it. It really does look like another typical western RPG if you're only going by screenshots alone, nothing quite special with the graphics, and I haven't seen a lot of advertising. You really need to dig past the generic bits on the top of the pile to find the jewels within.

I also agree that the Capcom name is probably putting people off. I'm sure it'll do really well on release, though. Then your friends will come back and say "OH MAN CHECK OUT THIS SWEET GAME."

And you'll say "I *bleep*ing showed you that one last month and you didn't give a shit go away."

Most people seem to be shrugging at the game from what I've seen. A lot of people are pushing this aside on account of Skyrim, even though it's been out for months and has about as much depth as a petri dish. Don't get me started on the combat. >_>

Capcom as the developers could well be turning people away but I don't feel that's really it. Capcom just haven't marketed or hyped the game enough, look at how ridiculous the Skyrim marketing was, the name of the game was on virtually everyone's lips after a while.

We have been buried in RPGs in recent years, a lot of them of exceptional quality. Between Skyrim, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, the abomination that was Dragon Age 2, Fallouts, Mass Effects etc. We've been buried in open world RPGs in recent years and I think people are just tiring of the genre.

Which is more than a little irritating because Dragon's Dogma seems to be the only thing trying to change the genre. Capcom are taking a risk with this new IP, it's not the same as all the RPGs we've had before, it's familiar but different.

Trying to be unique in a stagnating market and people are just shunning it for what seems like no damn reason. We've got a games industry saturated with unoriginality and 'safe' games and the first one that actually tries to change things people don't give a damn about.

*Sigh* This is why I don't like people.

An overly optimistic part of me actually thought that Skyrim would handle its dragon fights in a similar manner to Dragon's Dogma. After all that time in development, that brand new engine, the fact that dragons would even be involved at all, I expected to be clinging to the back of them as they soared across the sky.

I gave Bethesda too much credit.

Skyrim is a great game, but it's one of the worst RPGs I've ever played.

Since my PS3 died I don't know how long (if someone could tell me it YLOD while I was online so if you have me added you could tell me) I have been playing all my huge backlog.

Currently playing Dragon Quest VIII PS2, I can't remember what was the last time I played a game this long. 79 hours and I going for the last dungeon and I still have the post-game.

After that, well finish Metroid Prime, Tales of the Abyss, Unlimited Saga, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest VI, Dragon Warrior 1 & 2, Castlevania Double Pack, Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Eternal Darkness, Baten Kaitos Origin, Star Wars: Rebel Strike, Suikoden V, Suikoden Tactics, etc.

And that is not including the ones I have for my PS3...

It's a week until the release! A bit less than that, if you account for the hours since store openings too. I'm hoping that next week, starting Tuesday night my schedule will be largely free because this is one game I think I'll be playing for hours at a time, most/every day!

Pity I couldn't order the CE though. Well, I can also hope for a PC release and CE for THAT then!

That sounds like a pretty packed schedule SpartanNinja. How do you even find time to play games haha?

My workplace constantly throws me curveballs with my schedule. It's always five shifts a week, but sometimes they'll put them back-to-back, and I hardly ever get weekends off. I also work nights, so it's a little exhausting. And I live out in the boonies so I don't have anything else to do, so I basically just work and sleep and spend some time exercising at the docks to keep in shape. They look really beautiful in the morning, with the sunrise and the mist off the river...keeps my mind off my weariness and lets me run for longer. Endorphins and what not.

I was saving my energy for Diablo III but that turned out to be quite a failure on the count of my rural-rate connection, so I gave up on that...gonna catch up on Downpour this week I think, before Dragon's Dogma comes out. So damn excited that I almost don't care about D3. Almost...
