Saint's Row: The Third Header & Footer Contest
|
Log in to remove this sponsored message
So, we've got a nice shiny header atop the forum now, and it's looking all nice there. But it's a bit plain. So let's start up a header (and footer) contest, so that hopefully at some point down the line, we can have a fantastically flash and wonderful header sitting up there. Rules & Limits
- The header is to be no taller than 250px and 750px wide.
- The footer is to be no taller than 150px and 450px wide.
- All entries must be themed to Saints Row: The Third.
- All entries must be sincere. That means no entries of intentionally poor quality (e.g. made in Paint).
- Entrants may post as many candidate entries as they wish until the entry period finishes. Then, when the voting stage is to begin, entrants may be asked to select only a certain number of their headers and footers to be part of the voting stage.
- There is currently no set deadline for entries, and one will be defined at a future date.
- Some rules may be subject to change.

Are you just trying to criticise me for the sake of doing so? Having separate posts allows for superior organisation and presentation.

Or I'm doing it to allow for superior organisation and presentation. It literally harms noone in doing it this way, a way that I believe allows for superior organisation and presentation.
If whoever ends up moderating this forum decides that you are right and I am wrong, that having separate posts does not allow for superior organisation and presentation, and instead actually inhibits superior organisation and presentation, then they would be at full liberty to delete the extra posts, and have all the relevant information in the single post.

No deadline at the moment, we'll probably see a moderator appointed before time, and so it will likely be up to them to set a deadline.

Honestly, Memento Mori, I don't like it when a forum's header says "Welcome" or breaks the fourth wall by talking to the visiting members. Haven't since my lurking days on Neo. Just personal preference. Everything else about it looks great. That header is actually just a recycled idea from a header idea I used elsewhere. As for the welcome thing, I'm neither for nor against the idea. So in this case, it's there because it needs it. If I make a different header, then maybe I won't have the welcome thing in there if it isn't needed to balance the image. quote CTTR champion

Just a work in progress this, but progress has been halted by a lack of source images. Just thought I'd post it up on the off chance I get some feedback on the idea. Although that maybe pointless as by the time I finish it, if I don't scrap the idea, it could be vastly different.

Yeah, the plan is to have something there eventually. Probably in a similar style to what's already on there. I'm unlikely to include any text, as there's quite dominant lettering in the crest in the background.

Also, Memento Mori, are you ever going to add anything to those "reserved" posts?
It would make sense to add all the submitted pictures into one of them.
Either me, or whoever the appointed mod ends up being. But my intention was to do it only once the entry period has finished, and in preparation for the voting stage.

Artistically, that looks great. However, for my liking it has far too much of a Saints Row 2 vibe to it, considering your main stock.

Frankly, not every header is going to be good enough to be the header, so I'd be against it. If there are a few quality headers that, maybe say that end up close in the vote or whatever, whenever that happens, then I think the best thing would be to give each one a certain amount of time in the limelight, before moving to the next one.

When a moderator (team) is appointed, it will be up to them how entries are collated and the voting process leading to a selected header (or headers) is handled. As such, anything that would be part of that process I have no intention of doing before that. Until such time, ChiroVette has stated that he will periodically grab a header from this thread to serve on a temporary basis. Whilst I'm not 100% keen on that idea myself, I can see the merits behind it.

re: Saint's Row: The Third Header & Footer Contest

The activity in the forum has dropped largely I feel due to exhaustion of the topics with the current participants, and there being no new participants to provide addition opinions.
There have been a few new members that have dropped the odd post, but they haven't exactly stuck around to help create activity in the forum, and without further information release there's nothing new to discuss either.
So anything further with the header isn't really going to spike much more activity than having this thread already does. You might see a few posts after the voting is done, but it's a cul-de-sac, as once it's done, it's back to square one.

I haven't deleted it, so it may just be a temporary thing with ImageShack. I am frankly far too tired to faff around now, but I'll have a lookie tomorrow, if I remember. I wasn't that happy with it anyway, so it's not the end of the world. At some point, I will actually work on a new one, which hopefully will be awesome.

I'd still be disagreeing with you about only having one banner. WAIT!!! OVERUSED STATEMENT I STILL DISAGREE. If a forum has a tacky banner that looks shit, it is not going to make people want to post in it. A high level of presentation goes a long way - this is something that has a far wider reach than a simple forum.

Don't be ridiculous. People go to forums for the info and communication. This isn't a matter of quality vs. quantity at all. You just want there to be 1 permanent picture instead of many. Different people like different things. All you have to do is refresh the page for a different (" better") picture. We just need there to be a sentence above the picture (sort of like the Loungin' captions used to be), that says something like "Refresh the page for a different header". Not at all. Rightly or wrongly, if a forum is badly presented, it will reflect badly on the quality of the forum as a whole. This isn't just limited to the header either, but everything that goes together to make the forum look as it is. My issue is thus with the quality of the headers, not with the number, per se. If there weren't any shit ones up there, it wouldn't be so much of an issue. Penny for your thoughts, ChiroVette?

FAO: ChiroVette, sen JMN, TripleDX, Randome, CTTR champion, and anyone else who might give a shit. What about rotating headers of screenshots from us lot? A similar idea has been done elsewhere in the past, and I think it could work here. And as we play more, we can create more screenshots, and so it could in theory mean the header never gets boring. It could just be a straight crop and re-size with a 1px border, or it could be something more elaborate. If the latter, I've already knocked up an idea, and it takes me seconds to put a screenshot into the template I have, and I don't mind doing it for others if they can't themselves (I'll make the PSD available if this gets the thumbs up). And how often do you propose to update it? I'm sure everyone could provide tens of screen-shots per day. And how about getting rid of the big white frame and the name of the game? The name of the game is at the top of the forum anyway and the frame would just make the picture appear smaller. Besides, we don't all have the same picture editing software. It should still be a rotating system! But now with a lot more pictures. I did say it didn't have to be like that - I just provided it as an alternative suggestion. I did also say that if people aren't able to do it themselves, I'm sure I'd be happy to do it for them. However, if a simple resize with a 1px border is the better option (it may well be) then fair enough, and that's much, much easier to do. Still with this, all the images would need to be the same size. I think 500 x 281 looks okay:

As long as it's rotating, so we wouldn't end up with a single picture for a week. It would be on a randomiser, like the current set of headers are. quote Randome
As long as it's rotating, so we wouldn't end up with a single picture for a week.
But why 281 x 500? Why not 250 x 750? This may sound like an odd proportion, but they don't all have to have that proportion. There's a lot of situations where a really wide picture would look better Why 500 x 281? Because that's a nice size without being too small or too big. And it can't be 750 x 250 because that would stretch the image - you have to maintain the aspect ratios, which is what 500 x 281 does. The whole idea is based on simplicity. If you want to try and do something like that, then it just creates more hassle where none is needed. If you're worried about your differing resolutions on the PC version, then just worry about keeping the height the same, and if the width of your screenshot is different, then so be it. quote Randome
The wider it'll be, the less wasted space there will be on either side. A pointless concern. quote Randome
Or how about we find out how to put two slightly smaller pictures next to each-other? With maybe a space between them. Because that will lessen the effect. One will be fine. quote Randome
...but turn those pictures into links, so anyone who wants to see them in full-size could click on one. For once, you've made a good suggestion. quote Randome
And all pictures would have to be uploaded to Neoseeker. Why does this matter? I've never uploaded pictures to Neoseeker, and I don't really have any intention of doing so. quote Randome
There's still a lot of possibilities.
Occam's Razor.

You think maybe we can be just a little less snide? Saying it as I see it. quote Randome
In the Neoseeker gallery we can comment of the pictures and get notifications for those comments. The less sites are involved, the more convenient it is for members. But the less convenient it is for me. quote Randome
Not at all. Can you imagine how lame the internet would be if people would have thought that in the 80's? I'm not sure how easily this can be done in Neoseeker, but there's a brilliant slideshow-type gallery in the gaming wikias. Look at the example on the bottom of this page: http://saintsrow.wikia.com/wiki/DaedalusThe advantages are:
- No need to refresh the page to get a new picture.
- The pictures can still be links to fill-size images.
- It has those triangular links on either side, to move it back and fourth. New visitors can look at the whole thing and older ones can look at the most recent ones.
- Pictures can have any proportions. The gallery automatically adjusts every picture, with out stretching the pictures.
Surely someone could think of a way to make it start at a random point. And there could be additional links to the first and last picture. The point is you're complicating matters, when there's no need to.

That's just you. We have to think what's better for everyone and for Neoseeker. Ask anyone who has dealt with uploading, in any context, for the benefit of a community. It's the uploader who holds sway over where the files are hosted, not the community. quote Randome
Don't be afraid of the challenge to create something perfect. - In fact this should be some kind of a motto. Nothing wrong with that at all. But again, if there is no need to complicate something, then you shouldn't. All that needs to be done is change the current header from a rotation of designed headers to a rotation of screenshots. To spend time trying to do anything else would be a waste.

A big complicated program like that would let us see all pictures, with out having to refresh the page 1000 times. There's going to be hundreds at least tens of screen-shots. Can you imagine how long it would take if someone wanted to see them all.
There is a thread for screenshots, y'know. Anyway, it's just the forum header - looking through them isn't the priority.

quote Randome
But if you're a Neoseeker member and those screen-shots are uploaded for no other reason than to be used on Neoseeker... How can this be any less than perfect? Especially considering that other Neoseeker members can comment on those pictures and you'd be notified of those comments right here on Neoseeker. I frankly don't care. quote Randome
In that case there should be a rule that the header screen-shots will have to be posted into that thread in their full size. And then the links in the header would take one to the post where they're in full size. Why need it be mandatory? Sure, it seems like it would be counter-intuitive not to, but you don't need to force it anyone. Anyway, a screenshot for rotation doesn't necessarily have to be made by the person who originated it. For example, I could easily jump into the thread and grab some of the screenshots posted by someone else and resize for the header them myself .
