This is something that is interesting, especially concerning handheld devices. Would the Vita be commercially more successful if already existing and popular franchises were making it's way to the console? Granted we have a few big Playstation names on the Vita such as Uncharted, Call of Duty, LittleBigPlanet, etc. But what if the next game in the series was exclusively on the Vita? Would be people be more inclined to buy it? On the other hand, do you think the Vita would do better with nothing but a barrage of new, and interesting franchises never seen before?
Step back for a bit and learn from the release of the Nintendo 3DS. People were moaning that the game didn't release with a staple Mario game, that franchises such as Pokémon, Mario, and Megaman (all high grossing handheld lead games) weren't on the launch list, and that the only interesting game coming out for the 3DS after release was a 3D remake of LoZ: Ocarina of Time. Some disagreed and said there were plenty of good games out there if people just looked and didn't focus so much on the games that had already made a name for themselves.
Personally, I think the Vita should be focusing on already existing franchises - at least at first. When the Vita was first unveiled, Sony promised a portable console experience. So far, only Uncharted: Golden Abyss has delivered that feeling, at least for me. At the core all the other games I've played so far for the Vita have felt very limited and very Handheld-esque. I want to feel like I'm going on an epic adventure that lasts more than 15 hours *cough*ACIII:Liberation*cough*. Bring Dishonored to the Vita, bring Killzone to the Vita, bring Borderlands to the Vita, Bring full Call of Duty games with multiplayer functionality to the Vita, bring FIFA to the Vita. The handheld first needs to establish it's name before thinking about new IPs. While they are certainly more than welcome for the handheld, I don't think they'll be all that successful, as sales figures are currently a testament to.
What do you guys think?
