The PS Vita sold an estimated 72,479 units Christmas week, compared to 324,859 units sold in the previous week. That’s a drop of nearly 78 percent. The Vita was outsold by older portable devices like its predecessor, the PlayStation Portable (PSP), and the Nintendo 3DS, which has now sold over 4 million units since its debut last year. While these figures are certainly disappointing for Sony, they may also confirm what analysts have been predicting for some time – that the portable gaming market is shrinking thanks to the rise of tablets and smartphones. “There will always be a large and significant market for dedicated portable gaming, but we do believe it is a shrinking category that will eventually plateau to a sustainable market size for at least two competitors,” EEDAR Vice President of Capital Research and Communications Jesse Divnich recently told VentureBeat. 	I doubt there'd be a price drop that quickly, especially not for our release (since the people who are willing to pay the original price for it won't have to anymore, losing Sony moolah). -------------------

	If Sony does the same thing Nintendo did (cut the price after release) then Sony will technically be obligated to make it up to those who paid full price at launch thus costing them moolah anyway. I think they should just get the price cut over with before it makes it to the US so they don't have to go through all the bull crap and maybe increase their sales total. ------------------- .

	Well, I don't think there's that much of a surprise that sales dropped heavily in the second week. Of course price plays a large role in it, but so does the fact the console is still in its infancy. At this stage, given the limited range of games available, all people who were most likely to buy it would have done so in the week of its release. Sales will pick up; it would be a little premature to have such a reflexive attitude in price changing. ------------------- _last.fm

	If sony does do a price cut, they are not obligated to do anything for early adopters. People know very well (or should know by now) that consoles always have a rough start. That said the vita is doing terrible in comparison to the PSP and DS before it and the 3DS (which mind you, was released without any good titles long after the christmas rush). Nintendo didn't have to do the Ambassador thing (and tbh it's not even worth it unless your a diehard GBA fan) they did it to save face. Sony doesn't need to do such a thing either and they probably won't (but this is assuming they'll do a price cut which they wont). However Sony is NOT in a position to lower the price unlike Nintendo. Nintendo always sell their consoles for a profit meaning that they are always overpriced, no exception to the 3DS. Only now are they selling it at a loss, not to mention that nintendo is a video game company and all of their profits can go directly into the WiiU and 3DS at any given time (it's why Mario land and MK7 came out so early, they greatly increased the size of the development team in order to release it earlier). On the other hand Sony is not in the same position, from the earthquake they where 6 (probably a lot more) million dollars in debt and they are not exclusively a game company which limits how much they can invest into their consoles. The Vita is if any indication by all other Sony consoles already being sold at a loss. They cannot afford to lower the price they already lowered. TBH Sony bleeped up big time, they once again learned NOTHING from the PSP debacle and if they don't fix things soon I'm pretty sure by 2013 we'll be able to determine who will win this war. They already don't have Monster Hunter which is THE game to get in Japan (even worse they released the Vita around the same time MH for the 3DS was released, a stupid move on Sonys part). They put far too much confidence in their consoles and it always ends up biting them in the ass. 	Sony released the vita at a bad time. It was to close to x-mas and most parents would have their shopping done. So only the hardcore fans would pick already have picked it up. Then after x-mas people are trying to save money to pay off bills. ------------------- PSN: LJ94

Not only does Sony not have any heavy hitters for the Japanese market, they released it around the same time as MH for the 3DS was released. The game already sold I million units effectively burying the vita. Without Monster Hunter, Love Plus, Dragon Quest, etc. for their japanese titles the vita is screwed. Meanwhile 3DS already has MH, Kingdom Hearts, it's own Resident Evil (which also tries to reel in the classic fans), and other huge heavy hitters. Obviously the games change when confronting the Western Market but 3DS pretty much has that dominated as well. If you look at it from this standpoint the average Japanese consumer has 2 choices Vita Wifi model : 24800 yen + 4 GB card : 2200 yen + Dark Quest : 2800 yen = 29,800 yen 3DS 3DS : 15,000 yen + Mario Land : 4,800 yen + Mario Kart 7 : 4,800 yen + Monster Hunter Tri G : 5,800 yen = 30,400 yen Add in the fact that you HAVE to buy certain accessories to play games (the card) and put that in this down economy that's affecting everything, the only thing Sony can rely on at this point is a huge collection of third parties exclusives. But as history suggests companies will always be willing to invest more at the winning console as they view things short term rather than long term, so even if the vita gets 3rd party more than likely the 3DS will get better or more creative titles (kind of like how Revelations is the first game to attempt to go back to horror in years). At least the Vita has Persona 4, that alone will definitely boost sales in Japan. As it stands though it's still to early and even the PS3 managed to make a comeback but the handheld market is completely different with the absolute dominance Nintendo had every since the original gameboy plus the growing threat of phones. I myself am going to wait a year after Vita's release before deciding which one I'll get. 	Lol you guys. There were alot of things that made it's sales that low,Monster Hunter being the more important reason. And ofcourse the Juggernaut franchises new installments and to add to that the PSVita was released after the Quake/tsunami,and the bleepin memory prices. Also in it's second week 3DS sales were down 48%,just sayin. It's too early for a price drop,Nintendo was forced to do it because they priced their handheld too damn high for it being a DS+3D. $250 is a damn cheap price for the tech the PSVita has. 	It's not really surprising at all to find out they dropped significantly after the first week. It's not like all the hardcore fans that were waiting specifically aimed to get it a week late; most people that wanted it initially will have now got it already. I do find it pretty laughable that the PSP is outselling it but the PSP is actually a decent console in Japan. 80% is probably a bit much though. If people expect Sony to give compensation in the case of a price drop they should really look at their history too. 	Considering the first weeks sales weren't exactly spectacular (they were solid but nothing special) an 80% drop is pretty huge, especially since the Vita isn't released here until Feb which is just awful timing. New game releases will help sales but now Christmas has passed for the younger audience and with the sales ending before the Vita is released you have to ask whether a price drop is needed (seriously £260 is just far too much). You can make up excuses for why a system isn't selling but that doesn't matter, just like you can give reasons why the Wii shouldn't have sold the fact of the matter is that all that matters is units shifted, and so far the Vita has had a huge falling off after only solid first week sales in a territory where Sony and Nintendo usually do extremely well.
