Servicing my Transmission

At the moment my car changes gears very rough when going from 1st to 2nd. I've been told that this could be because I need to have my transmission serviced. Is this true? If so, would you recommend for me to service the transmission myself? I'm really interested in learning, but I don't want to damage my car and I'm a complete noob when it comes to fixing/servicing/whatever cars. This seems like a really easy guide to follow.

Have you checked your fluid levels yet?

re: Servicing my Transmission

Its a easy guide to follow cause it is easy!... well on my truck (Silverado) like the article shows, everything is pretty much right in front of you.

Doing this on cars that dont have a drain plug suck because your forced to drop a pan with x amount of fluid still sloshing around. If your stuck in a scenario where you dont have a drain plug, its best to loosen all but 4 bolts. Leave 3 in on the side you dont want fluid pouring out as these bolts will help you drop the pan slowly to drain fluid from the side you left one bolt in. When your ready with oil pan, remove the 1 bolt from the designated drain side, then proceed to loosen the back 3 bolts, and the pan might start to droop or you might have to jiggle the pan to loosen the gasket's grip. Remove the final bolts when enough fluid is drained out and you can drop it comfortably without stuff hopefully covering you.

What car are you doing this currently on?

It's a WRX.

Not yet, I'll check it tomorrow cos it's dark outside. I was obviously gonna check that first, but even if that is the problem I'd still like to service the transmission because I just bought the car a few weeks ago and I'm not sure when it was last serviced.

re: Servicing my Transmission

I'm guessing your car didn't come with any sort of warranty...?

To be honest, if you're not familiar with working with cars and you just got this one... maybe the transmission isn't the place to start learning. It's kinda important and very expensive to fix if you would mess it up.

re: Servicing my Transmission

Automatic WRX? That makes me a sad panda.

Servicing the transmission really isn't too hard, it just involves dropping the pan, changing out the filter and filling it back up with tranny fluid.
