However, as I notice that the ME2 forum doesn't seem to have a huge amount or regulars:

I'm not entirely sure why your problem could be occurring. I've noticed that my Left 4 dead 2 is having similar problems in which any smoke or fire or other particle effect is producing a series of coloured lines that form a mesh, rather than the desired effect. I'm pretty sure that my L4D2 is just a case of "the disc is f**ked", because it's an Xbox version, not a PC version, but you could try asking a local computer nerd to come take a look at your game and see if they can find the problem by looking more into your computer.
