Where's does the water in Dragonsreach come from?

So, I was following the river that flows all the way from Whiterun to Windhelm, but then wondered, where does the water in Dragonsreach come from? You know the one that flows just below the castle, into the city, and then outside Whiterun into the river.

So, I checked out the backside of Whiterun, and found... nothing! Not a single clue from where the heck the water comes from! XD it's too much to be stored in Dragonsreach, plus, the castle is really high up, so, how do they get it up there? Pumps? That sounds like Dwemer tech, lol, this is crazy xD

Yeah. Ever hear of an Artesian Well?

One thing I found out is this: never wonder about video game logic. It doesn't always make sense. Plus they live in a magic land full of dragons and spells and sh!t, so it's to be expected that they have magic water. That, or it's just all their piss and wash water. Lots of people in Whiterun, right?

Heheh, well I'm no urban engineer, but I checked the Artesian Aquifer article on Wikipedia, and well, from what I understood, is that the well has to be built in lower-leve ground surrounded by higher-level that stores the water, that way the pressure from those places pushes into the little well so the water comes out, that makes sense.

But, Dragonsreach is a REALLY high place, and there isn't many elevated terrain around it!

LOL, but I know, I'm taking things too literally from our world, and not considering all the magic advancements they have in Tamriel and whatnot, heheh, so, yeah, after reading about the artesian well everything makes more sense, though, forgive my ignorance and nit-picking

You're right about the magic, it's certainly "possible" in the Skyrim world for the well under Dragonsreach to be magically sourced.

However, just because Dragonsreach happens to be in a relatively high place compared to it's surroundings doesn't mean there couldn't(theoretically) be an artesian water table underneath the plains around Whiterun which are ultimately fed by the mountainous terrain much further away.

Keep in mind as well, if there was such a water table underneath said plains, Dragonsreach would be the only place near there which would offer such a source an escape route from it's subterranean prison.
