Letters of Inheritance

I was in Whiterun, decided to go to the Bannered Mare, pre-knowledge that you had to start by going to fort dawnguard, thought I might hear a rumour there. Out of no-where Uthgerd the Unbroken attacks me, a known bug, and so am forced to kill her. Wierd thing though, a few literal hours later, minding my own business in Solitude, the courier appears and says he has a letter of inheritence for me and a "large" amount of gold. So I read the letter, from Vignar Gray-Mane, saying I have inherited her fortune, a measly 100 gold. Weird thing though, is I never had her as a follower and I have never married, so unsure as to; 1. Why I received her things, and 2> I never knew wills were in the game? Anyone else have this happen?

Yes a few times.

They are (As far as i know) always 100 gold. Bare in mind 100 gold is alot to citezens in Skyrim and you dont get 100, the Jarl keeps 10 so you get 90.

You don't need to have had them as a follower to get the inheritance, you just need to have helped them, maybe even inadvertantly. For example. Athis of the Companions attacked me for no reason (As did the rest of the companions, which ensued a huge fight between the Companions and the Whiterun guards), so i left Whiterun and came back int. Later on the courier pops up and gives me the 90 gold inheritance, and the letter says Athis is dead.
