Skill Leveling Rate

I'm playing as a sword and shield warrior with heavy armor and my one handed skill is leveling faster than my block and heavy armor by far.
Is that normal or am I playing wrong?

Well, if you ease back on your one-handed skill - let them hit you more - you will find that your Block and Armor will rise a lot. Let them knock the stuffing out of you until you are half-dead. It's great for raising Block and Armor.

Well, you can, but you almost have to be trying. Otherwise, I agree with all of this. Don't worry about your block/HA leveling slower, it's supposed to. If it's really a problem, or there's some perks you want to open up, join the Companions for their trainers, or Grind/tank a few levels to even it up. This isn't rocket surgery.

I actually had a similar problem with Dreadfall, before I started over, because I decided to add Block to her skills late in the build. I role-play her, so I had to justify focusing on block. I simply wound up cherry tapping weak enemies like Skeletons, Skeevers, and Wolves with the bash, since the aren't "Worth using the blade on." Once you get up to Power Bash, the block skill gains a lot more experience. Unfortunately, there's not a similar breakaway perk for Heavy Armor, you pretty much have to tank, or pay for training if you want it to level quicker. That, and the high levels for any of the more useful perks is one of the reasons i hate HA. LA gets weightless 20 levels sooner, yet doesn't have half of the weight/speed penalties to begin with. I guess that's the trade-off for far superior protection, but yet again, you only need enough armor to keep you from getting killed. Beyond that' I'd rather invest in doing more damage.

If you aren't all ready, use the best heavy shield you can get. That also adds to your total Armor value, which stops more damage, and earns you more experience as well. The Lord stone even does this, and any Fortify Heavy Armor you can get. If you're using Restoration at all, your best bet is probably to go pick a fight with a Giant (If you can find just 1, 2 can strike simultaneously, and 1 shot you together) or kill one, and kite the other away from the Mammoths. Tank on him, and heal after every hit, you'll be amazed how fast your Armor skill goes up. They telegraph their attacks way in advance, and have a pretty rigid attack pattern, so you'll have plenty of time to get your shield up. I wouldn't worry too much about it, though. Armor, especially Heavy isn't really all that useful a skill.

All depends on what you do really. I raise my one-hand faster simply because I hit and run. I still use a shield for defensive purposes, but thats what happens.

Use your shield more and you'll raise that.

You can also use a shield with some low-level destruction magic in order to put a focus on your defense. You essentially put your shield up and either take the hit or bash, then light their ass on fire a bit. Rinse, repeat.

That's part of the tactic, actually. The fact that it does take a long time is part of what makes it work.

Or you can just stand there and let Skeevers rape your armor and shield.
