What's "normal", Adept? What a coincidence, that's my default difficulty, and I've never had a problem with wearing robes. Early in the game is where they're the most critical, because you don't have the magika, nor half off perks to cast spells over, and over. Also, there's no reason why you can't wear Heavy boots, gloves, and possibly a helmet around them.

You're Assuming that armor is the only effective way to play, and that's just not the case. Otherwise, the designers wouldn't bother with robes, and neither would anyone else. Also, if you look on Utoob, there are of course a lot of munchkins that will tell you the only way to play on Master is Alc/Enc/Smith up to the armor cap, but it's just not so. Look around just this site, and actually read what other people are saying instead of voicing your opinion as the only Truth, and you'll see lots of different techniques for making robes effective.

That's another thing that hasn't been mentioned yet. If you're using magic, and started The College of Winterhold storyline, they gave you a free Ward Spell. These work fantastically for blocking dragon breath. Their high drain makes them difficult to keep up until you can unlock Ward Absorb, and they can break stunning you against other spells, but fire, or frost breath never seems to overload them, and you can keep it up through a single breath attack. If you don't already have the Subtitles turned on, the dragon uses the word "Yol" for firebreath, warning you to get your Ward up. You can also attack through it, unlike a shield. Early in the game, this works better against dragon breath than a shield without the Elemental protection perk, and if you also have Destruction, you don't have to close with the dragon.

Yes, in the description (Magic/Restoration) it lists how many Points of damage it can absorb. I think it's 40 for Lesser ward, and mages seem to know this, because they'll double cast bolts to stun you. Thing is, Dragon breath never seems to do this if you have it fully up when it hits. (There's also a short period where the ward isn't fully up, and it'll still break, <a second.) So you have to cast it before the breath hits you, and either last through the assault, or interrupt it before your gauge bottoms out. The dragon can't bite during this attack, so if you have enough blue juice, you're better off just whacking it with a sword, and retreating when it stops. Sw/ard is actually a pretty damned fine dragon killing combo, because you take no breath damage, and can sidestep circles around it between breaths, just don't get too close to the wing. Once you get Ward Absorb (Resto 60) you can keep it up as long as he's breathing on you, and use the extra to power Frost damage to keep it grounded. If I'm using Wards, I actually want them breathing on me, because that's when they're most vulnerable.

Just keep in mind that 1) arrows go right through them, 2) they take a moment to fully charge up, 3) only block Dragon Breath effectively without stunning you, and 4) drain Magica quickly until they have spell absorbtion. These make them extremely tricky, with a steep learning curve, but because they block All damage from Dragon Breath, may be just the trick for this particular problem. Also, Resto trains quickly with Healing, which can also save your life.
