	meh playing a pure mage sucks anyway. I would never recommend doing it ever. Unless you want to be frustrated. Thats why most mages I use have Heavy armor so he can take the hits while he slowly wittles the enemies down. ------------------- Rest in peace Neil Armstrong

	Armor is great for standing there, and taking damage like an idiot. Robes are good for running around, and laying waste with magic. Two different playing styles, neither more valid than the other. Just because you can't figure out how to use them doesn't make robes useless. Now you know why Magic is associated with intelligence. I'd kind of like clothes with other enchantments than magica fortification/regen. There's a few, but none randomly generated. So far, I've found the Shrouded Robes set, Jester's/Cicero's clothes, and the Archmage's boots of Shock Resistance. Where's my boots of running speed? ------------------- "Don't Fight, Kill."

	Don't insult me. Robes are useless at the beginning and early game in general. especially on normal and above unless you have the skill to play it, which if he's asking advice and is level 11 I'm going to assume he doesn't. ------------------- Rest in peace Neil Armstrong

	I think robes are useless by themselves. But they're quite useful later on in game(i'm on expert). My max magic is pretty good for lvl 30(500 ). When i charge into a fight, i start with a flesh spell then switch to close wounds and fireball. I start throwing fireballs like crazy, and still have enough mana left to heal myself and my follower. Whether or not robes are useless depends on the playstyle of the player.

What's "normal", Adept? What a coincidence, that's my default difficulty, and I've never had a problem with wearing robes. Early in the game is where they're the most critical, because you don't have the magika, nor half off perks to cast spells over, and over. Also, there's no reason why you can't wear Heavy boots, gloves, and possibly a helmet around them. You're Assuming that armor is the only effective way to play, and that's just not the case. Otherwise, the designers wouldn't bother with robes, and neither would anyone else. Also, if you look on Utoob, there are of course a lot of munchkins that will tell you the only way to play on Master is Alc/Enc/Smith up to the armor cap, but it's just not so. Look around just this site, and actually read what other people are saying instead of voicing your opinion as the only Truth, and you'll see lots of different techniques for making robes effective. I like Robes because they don't slow you down. Even against Dragons, mobility is a great asset. You get Unrelenting Force after your first Dragon, and that can interrupt their breath attacks. This works if they're hovering, but when they straffe over, their breath travels in a line, so side-step at right angles to it to get out of that path, and heal immediately, especially if you're on fire. Also, they have very slow turning speed on the ground, so you can side-step around them, they turn in place instead of comming after you. Then, if you have any ranged attack from spells, or a bow, you can bring their health down enough to force them to land. The only build which absolutely requires Armor is a pure 1, or 2 handed warrior, and even the former can get away with defensive spells like Oakflesh, and Wards. That's another thing that hasn't been mentioned yet. If you're using magic, and started The College of Winterhold storyline, they gave you a free Ward Spell. These work fantastically for blocking dragon breath. Their high drain makes them difficult to keep up until you can unlock Ward Absorb, and they can break stunning you against other spells, but fire, or frost breath never seems to overload them, and you can keep it up through a single breath attack. If you don't already have the Subtitles turned on, the dragon uses the word "Yol" for firebreath, warning you to get your Ward up. You can also attack through it, unlike a shield. Early in the game, this works better against dragon breath than a shield without the Elemental protection perk, and if you also have Destruction, you don't have to close with the dragon. I suspect (but don't assume) that your build may be spread a little too thin, which makes your level high without any one offensive, or defensive skill up to the same degree. If you try everything, then the enemies, especially Dragons get tougher every 10 levels, so you have to have an Offensive skill that's also strong. Doesn't really matter what that skill is, except for the tactics you use with it, but having 35 in Destruction, 1 Handed, OR archery is better than having 20 in all three. If you find yourself completely unable to level up after trying all the suggestions above, you might have to start over, or load a save from before level 10 if you have one. Oh don't play the Martyr, Never did I say my was was the one and only truth and if you can't take a differing opinion best not to shoot it down by making it seem like I have a God complex. I offered my own opinion and why I don't like yours but I never stopped you or him from reading or taking into account anybody else's opinion in exclusion from mine. Anywa Wards are useful but it draws upon your magicka pool far quicker than any robes can replenish it in the heat of combat, very early in the game. Especially on Adept an above where the enemies are generally tougher near the beginning, of course later in the game the game is very easy for any build Robes or not but at Level 11 a new player is going to struggle using it or them. Plus you could also stack ward with the armor too, so that only helps. But using magicka and a ward at the same time early in the game will work about 10 seconds and then you are forced to use other weapons or potions to replenish magicka. Those larger battles with 6+ draugrs are devastating when you run out of magicka. But sure if it works for you, use it and hell even tell others about it, but I'm still going to tell mine and even say its better because for me it is better, if you don't like what I say then fine disagree and even tell me about it but don't discredit me by making me out to be something I'm not. If you can keep it up for a few seconds, the breath weapon will stop, and you can let it drop. OTOH, a Ward is the only thing available in the game, which will stop ALL the damage from dragon breath. If you can't keep it up for the duration, then interrupt it with a shout, or 1 handed Power Attack. The dragon will have to recharge, allowing your Magika to recover. Here's where Robes are crucial at low levels, and a hood, or some jewelry to extend your bar. It takes timing, and probably a long time if you're not doing a lot of damage, but it does work. Don't keep it up draining your Magika, and once you start facing Firebolts, and Ice Spikes (about CL10, or 11) the stun effect of the ward breaking can get you killed by other spellcasters. When it comes to rooms full of Draugr, just stand outside, and fill the room with Fire. Retreat if you have to, but burn them with a Mage character. They really hate fire, and it's amazing how common pools of oil are in those crypts. This obviously doesn't work against dragons at low level. quote Have a nice day, I'm off to watch the new avatar. If I'm using Wards, I actually want them breathing on me, because that's when they're most vulnerable. Just keep in mind that 1) arrows go right through them, 2) they take a moment to fully charge up, 3) only block Dragon Breath effectively without stunning you, and 4) drain Magica quickly until they have spell absorbtion. These make them extremely tricky, with a steep learning curve, but because they block All damage from Dragon Breath, may be just the trick for this particular problem. The damage I always got was negligible but then again I never really used it too much myself, and I focused on Health for 45 levels or so...
