Lore about what exactly? Skyrim in general? or The Elder Scrolls as a whole? Just ask, and me or some other TES nutjob will answer your questions! :]
The books themselves follow multiple different views in different provinces, they really just fill in some blanks in between the games.
Basic Skyrim Lore:
During the Merethic Era, Nedic[the old Nord name] ships carrying Ysgramor and his followers landed on Skyrim's northern cape, they were fleeing a massive civil war that was tearing their homeland, Atmora, apart. From there they branched out into Skyrim, successfully creating small villages and towns. It was almost impossible for the Nedes to not run into any Mer[elves/beastfolk], when they did, there was at first peace and prosperity. Man and Mer worked along side one another to create a new home for both of them, of course they had their respected territories.
And then years passed as the Mer watched on as the Nedes continued to grow.. and grow.. as more ships landed from the Northern continent Atmora and even more Nedes were being conceived due to the peace time. The Elves felt threatened, they saw Man as a growing terror. The Nedes were taking more and more land, more crops, more cattle, more resources that the Elves, at first, owned entirely before the Nedes' arrival.. They waited for their time to repel the now invasive Nedes.
On a cold night, the Elven clans of Skyrim descended upon the Nedic capital of Saarthal. When they arrived, they slaughtered every man, woman, and child that called Skyrim home.. But during the chaos, Ysgramor and his two sons fled Saarthal for the docks, still ferrying their ships that brought them to Tamriel. They fought through the Elves until they sailed off into the Sea of Ghosts, back to their war-riddled homeland.
Much to Ysgramor's dismay, Atmora was at peace once again, he felt like he had betrayed his people that first landed on Skyrim. If he would have known Atmora would have corrected it's civil war issues, he may not have left in the first place.. So to uphold his honor, and the honor of every Nede slaughtered on that night, including his wife. He called upon the 500 Companions.. a brutal company of warriors that live to fight and die. Using his words of persuasion, Ysgramor gathered an army that would decimate the Elves for what they did to his people. They re-boarded their ships, and sailed back across the Sea of Ghosts, this time with a fully prepared army, thirsty for Elven blood.
Once Ysgramor and his Companions landed on Skyrim for the second time, it would become their permanent home, as the Nedes conquered the Elven tribes, including the Snow Elves[Falmer]. They forced them out of Skyrim[or deep underground] and downward into Cyrodiil and other provinces that were unnamed at this time, and as over population occurred in Skyrim, the Nedes too moved down and outward, calling many unnamed provinces home.
During this whole time, Dragons have been around.. Laying waste to any who dare venture into their path or lairs.. And around this time, Alduin was finally putting his self-proclaimed destiny into effect. His wish was to conquer Nirn and every race on it so that his Dragon-brothers could rule the planet, with him being the supreme being of course. Alduin decimated Man and Mer alike, even killed off his own brothers who turned against him. Any man or mer who didn't oppose Alduin, became a part of his Dragon Cult[Draugrs, Wights, Overlords, Dragon Priests] And as the great Dragon War waged on for years, Man finally found the answer they were looking for.. the Thu'um.
The Nedes learned to speak the dragon language thanks to Kyne, the Goddess of Storm. She sent Paarthurnax, who was Alduin's first lieutenant, to teach man the way of the voice, so that Man could finally step up and fight back against the unstoppable dragons. Paarthurnax betrayed Alduin and taught Man to use the voice, and this officially started the Dragon War. The Nedes also took on a new name at this time, calling themselves Nords instead, to represent the significant change specific Nedes had gone through. The Thu'um masters then created their own Shout for Dragons, a shout that would tear away at the Dragon's very soul, causing it immense pain and frustration. This Shout, would be the secret weapon for Man to force the Dragons into submission once and for all.
And then the time finally came, where Alduin would be challenged by the first Nord Heroes. They fought valiantly and bravely, but their combined Thu'um still was no match for Alduin's incredible fury.. When two of the three heroes fell to their knees, the final hero unleashed the power of an Elder Scroll to banish Alduin away. When Alduin was cast into the rifts of time, his Dragon-brothers felt deserted. They scattered across Nirn fending for themselves and other befriended Dragons until they were all hunted down. A very small few still survived up to the events of TES:Skyrim. As for the Dragon Cult, they tried to uphold their places of power, but the races of Tamriel fought back. Until finally killing or imprisoning them inside their very own temples that they worshiped the Dragons from. The Dragon Cult is also responsible for the Dragon Burial Mounds found around Tamriel[mainly Skyrim], they believed that one day Alduin would return and resurrect his fallen Dragon-brothers and Dragon Cultists so they saved the bones and corpses of all who follow Alduin.
Almost four whole Eras pass when Alduin reappears in the present Dragonborn's timeline. This time seeking to fully complete his plan..
what's puzzling you is the nature of my game
