I mean the Empire will no longer fight the Aldmeri Dominion. It's an official diplomatic issue, and has nothing to do with personal opinion or disagreement at this point. I haven't seen the precise terms of the treaty which was signed at the end of the Great War, known as the White-Gold Concordat, but I can guess it probably contains a clause which reads something to the effect of:

"The Empire, being admitted of defeat on this day, hereby avows to never again wage war on the Aldmeri Dominion, or any of it's nation states; to include but not limited to: espionage, sabotage, open combat, propaganda, or other activity which may cause political, social, economic, or military detriment or unrest in those nations. Further, the Emperor and any who swear fealty to him or the Imperial Throne of Cyrodiil, do hereby acknowledge the racial superiority of the Elven races of Nirn, by birth, over that of the mer races of Nirn."

This makes the Empire officially a pawn of the Aldmeri Dominion. The Emperor is their puppet, and the Empire itself is subject to their whim, in addition to being subject to the terms of the White-Gold Concordat. There is literally no chance that anyone who wishes to remain in the officially sanctioned employ of the Empire will violate that whim for the next 100-200 years without swift and merciless retribution by the Thalmor. The Empire is done fighting the Thalmor for the foreseeable future. If anything, the Empire needs to be abandoned and reestablished from it's roots, in Skyrim, at The Throat of the World.

As for fighting back, the Stormcloaks are in the best position to do that. They're made up of perhaps as much as 90% native troops, who were raised in Skyrim, which means they know the lay of the land, and how to survive for weeks if not months, alone, with only the clothing on their backs, in conditions which would kill the average Jonius Patheticus of Cyrodiil in but a few days.

I see the imperials and the empire being a type of ROME.
They have all there laws throughout Oblivion and regions like Skyrim for the good of the people.
everyone hated roman law until it collapsed then the people soon realised that you don't know what you have till it's gone!

Your last point is much closer to what I was thinking, which invalidates all the conjecture you brought forth in the rest of your post above. In a universe like that of TES, it is the heroes which shape history. Unless the Dovahkiin is removed from that plot line, there's no chance for the Thalmor to do much of anything.

As I said, the combined might of the Aldmeri Dominion and the Empire would fall on the Dovahkiin like a raindrop on a windshield.

In any case, for me, it's a question of principal, and I can't, in good conscience, side with an Empire which seeks to suppress individual freedoms. Their reason for attempting to do so is irrelevant.

If I'm correct... I remember reading/hearing the banning of Talos wasn't even fully enforced in Skyrim until the Stormcloaks started their little rebellion.

That's a large part of why the rebellion was started. If you talk to the Thalmor dude in Understone Keep he'll say that they forced the empire to quit worshipping Talos because he was just a man and therefore shouldn't be recognzied in their pantheon. And the Thalmor are extremely conceited, I hate them.

But on my character, I'm an Orc and fighting for the Imperial Legion. On my other character, I'm a Dark Elf and a Stormcloak. I just thought it was funny to be a race that they hated and then save their lives... repeatedly.

What about Heimskr? He's a Talos priest and he preaches in the public with many Imperial supporters around him. If you save the Imperial at the beginning of the game, Alvor the blacksmith will tell you that the Imperials didn't even enforce the banning of worship until the Stormcloaks instigated them.
