No home - can I store my stuff as a Companion?

I wouldn't.

I'm surprised your having problems. I already have 3 houses. Mages guild, White Run, WinterHold.

You actually get a space. The Companions just lob ya in with the other boots. I'd test it first.

College yes you get your own room. I dont know why your having issues in making money. To me this is the easiest Elder Scrolls game to make money in. I only have 1 house(Whiterun) but for the past week or so I been saving money to get the 100k coin achievement, closing in on 50k.

Dont put your items in the Companion place.

What I will advise you is work on getting to become Thane of Whiterun, have Lydia as a follower(she doesnt die unless you attack her, if shes low on health just have to be careful(I save before I get into fights because on numerous times I accidentally killed her). Shes a great tank and an awesome pack mule letting you loot more items and having her carry them(just dont dismiss her if shes carrying them). Depending on what I'm doing, I easily haul in about 2-5k or more a dungeon/cave/etc. It also depends on your stam in what you can carry yourself. I use light armor so I can carry more items. I melee/archer alot so really heavy armor would be better for me but like I said Lydia is an awesome tank specially if you gear her up(although this takes up weight in being a pack mule).

My lydia was burned to a crisp by a dragon.

Well,I became a Thane earlier tonight. Got to admit, I was reluctant to have lydia follow me exactly for that reason -- wanted to get a couple of levels under my belt so I wouldn't lose her in the first few minutes. I guess I'll end up taking her with me, but saving every other second. Thanks.

The Companions drawers can store anything without disappearing. In fact, I stored a bunch of dragon bones in a barrell outside of the blacksmith shop in white run and came back later to find them still there. Wherever you leave an item, it will be there for good, trust me.

Also Lydia CAN die. I've had to reload numerous saves because she got mobbed by a dwarven centaurion while carrying a lot of important items for me.

Your items will eventually vanish. Barrels and chests reset with loot after x amount of days. For example, if you visit a house and steal everything after a certain amount of time all the containers will have new items in them. This is exactly why you can't safely store things outside property you own. The rooms you get in guilds are an exception cause they work as if you own them.

You shouldn't need a house if you've joined the companions or the college at winter hold as you can store some stuff next to your bed in those places. But, if you really want a house (to store your housecarl or other follower) it shouldn't take more than a three, maybe four, quests and their associated loot to afford the house in Whiterun. Oh yeah, stop buying stuff if you want a house. Gotta save money somehow. know what i mean.
