Find a mammoth near water... stand in the water.

Shower it with arrows.

They dont like water so they dont go in.

Yes, there is. I've found merchants with them for sale, just short of the 500 gold mark.

I was fortunate enough, however, to find a dungeon with around 5 of them lying around. Racking my brains to try and remember where it was, as a dead mammoth is in there as part of the scenery, so it should be a guaranteed place to find at least one.

I found about 5 laying around like Memento did about 90% sure in the same cave also. It was some Bandit cave/Minine area. If I'm able to get on tonight, I'll tell you. :>

North of Whiterun is a bandit camp with a mine, inside the mine is a wheelbarrow with 3+ tusks laying on top of it (at least when I went there). Not sure on the camp name but it's got a wooden barrier around it.

This dude's already answered this question. I found mine there as well after giving up on taking the 'mammoth' by its horn... Get it? Mammoth by its horn? I crack myself up sometimes...

I stole mine from Birna's shop in Winterhold. Later, she hired some thugs to take me out.

There's a camp of Khajiht just outside of Whiterun he'll sell you one for 440-ish gold.
