How to get to high hrothgar?

I'm running around in the mountains and has so far only found one possible way and it involved a lot of tricky climbing. I was eventually though mauled into the ground by a polar bear and he was way above my level. Not sure if I took the right way, is the road up there obvious or am I missing something?

If you remember the path could you take a screenshot and draw the road up there I'm lost in the mountains xD

(Found a cave full of vampires with some good loot, is it close to that cave?)

Look at the 3d map.
It should be easy to spot the place where the path should go.

To get to High Hrothgar easily, you need to find Ivarstead. There is a trail leading from there all the way up to High Hrothgar. Thankfully, Ivarstead isn't too hard to find. If you leave Whiterun and head west, then cross the bridge, you'll find a road that goes north and then loops around the mountain with High Hrothgar. Pay attention to the signs, as they will point the way to Ivarstead when the road splits. Just stay on the main road and follow the signs, and you'll be fine.

As a warning, the climb from Ivarstead to High Hrothgar is a bit of a challenge. You'll face several Ice Wolves (much tougher than you standard wolves), and come across an Ice Troll as well. Have a good weapon and plenty of healing, just to be safe.

Sure let me finish this quest and Ill go outline the road for you.

Also, some fighting tips for the troll (might seem useless but that thing is tougher than the first dragon you fight, believe me); Keep your distance. If you're using Destruction magic then unload it all on him. Dual wielding Flames is a nice strategy. If you're going for melee then dodge his attacks and try to hit him while he's flailing his arms around hitting nothing. Don't get greedy, he can and will kill you in two hits if you're not careful. You should also use the Unrelenting Force to stun him and get some nice hits in.

Buy a horse.
ride to the mountain.
Use the horse to defy gravity.

There's a path that just rings up the mountain. I'm pretty sure it's visible on the map. It starts at this little village at the bottom of the mountain. It's a fair walk up and you'll run into a couple creatures. One of them is an Ice Troll, I think it's called. (Something like that) I used my werewolf power and it took me a very long time to kill it, and I had a companion with me. I'd maybe try just not fighting it and going straight up to the temple. Anyways good luck.
