Find trees and cut down about 10-15 wood. Turn the wood into wooden planks and make a crafting table, a pickaxe and a sword. Then start mining for coal so you can make torches. That's how I always start out

if you want to hide your good items from other people, dig a hole behind your crafting table or furnace (or any type of block actually) and put a chest in the ground, make sure it's not visible from outside also, so that way whenever you want an item from there all you gotta do is break the block, grab the item, and put the block back

When you mine for stone/coal/gold/anything, never start from dirt. Always go find a cave or someplace that you can see coal on the surface. You'll save a lot of time and tools.

Impossible. Every 3rd player has cheats or something, I am never able to hide my stuff unless it is a server with "lock" mods to lock the chest.

I can put a chest down at the bedrock, under the ocean, submerged in lava, with no distinct passages to the place, and it'd be raided within hours...

A way to avoid players using X-Ray is surround your chest with Iron Ore, most X-Rayers will ignore it and overlook it, or get the silk touch enchantment on a pickaxe and surround it in Coal Ore since X-Rayers care less about that than Iron.
