More or less. Gold is usually found around the same depths as Iron, but it's a lot less common (understandably so). I don't think I've ever seen gold at the surface, but then again...Rare.

Diamond is found rather deep in the world (from the bedrock layer up to about 14 blocks up from there (not exactly sure how high). It has been said that it will more often appear beneath lava spawns, but that's dangerous of course.

Redstone is less common than iron, but more common than gold. It too is found at lower levels generally, like diamond. At least, I don't recall ever finding it near the surface.

In terms of commonality, I'd say it goes something like this.

Coal > Iron > Redstone > Gold > Lapis (Used for making blue dye) > Diamond. Lapis and Diamond are more interchangeable. I might even say it's less common as an ore, but each block drops multiple pieces which offsets it somewhat.

There are other special blocks, like mossy cobblestone which appears in dungeons (which are rather rare).
