The Minecraft server is just a program that you run on a computer so that other people can connect to it and play together on the same world. If all you want is a small server for you and your friends, you should be able to just run the server program on your home computer. Also, if all you want is a normal server, with no mods or plugins or anything, it's fairly simple to set up, too.

First, download the server software from minecraft.net. If you have Windows, you can just download the .exe file. Then just place it in it's own folder on the desktop and run it. A message box with lots of text will pop up. This is the called the console. It shows you how the server is running, what's in the chat, etc. You can also type op commands into it like you can in the game if you are an op (but without the / in front).

Second, stop the server by typing "stop" into the console. If you just close it with the X, then the world will not save properly and people will lose their buildings. Then go back into the folder you created (with the Minecraft .exe) and you will see that there's a bunch of new stuff in there. Most of the files are self-explanatory (banned players, ops, whitelist, etc.). What you need to do it open up server.properties in a text editor (Notepad is good) and edit it a bit. The things you may want to change are allow-nether, spawn-monsters, spawn-animals, max-players, pvp, allow-flight, and white-list. You can safely ignore the rest. Once you have made the desired changes, you can start your server again.

Congratulations, you are now running a vanilla Minecraft server! However, if you have a router (which you probably do), then you need to do one last thing: port forwarding. First, figure out how to log into your router. Instructions are often on the bottom on the router. If not, look up the router's model number online for help on how to log in to it.

Next, you need to find the port forwarding area. Just look everywhere until you find it. I can't tell you exactly where it is because all router software is different.

Finally, forward that port! Name it "Minecraft" or something. For the internal and external ports, use 25565 (Minecraft's default port number). For the internal IP to send it to, you'll need to send it to the computer that is running the server. Go onto this computer and press the Windows key and the R key at the same time. Then type in "cmd" in the box and press enter. The command prompt will show up. Type "ipconfig" and press enter. Look for your internal IP v4 address. It will start with 168.192, and look something like 168.192.3.102. Put this number into the port forwarding box for the IP to forward to. Then just save your router settings and you're done!

For people to connect to your server, you need to give them your external IP. You can find your IP by going to http://www.whatismyip.com/. Just give people that IP address and then they can use it to log in to your server! (as long as you keep it running).

I know it seems like a lot of work, but this whole process can be completed in under a minute if you know what you're doing. If you need extra help, feel free to ask. There are also a lot of resources online that can help you.

Also, in server.properties, you should probably leave the server-ip field blank.
