Is there a way I can exit my wooden boat without it exploding into a million pieces?

You can leave the boat without it breaking up (just right-click before it hits something), but the boat can't leave the water without breaking up. That's one of the drawbacks of Minecraft's boats, unfortunately. I've heard a rumour that an upcoming PC update will fix that and make boats drop themselves, though.

I can't believe I forgot the lag! This is hands down the worst part about playing Minecraft. Even when I'm on Tiny render distance and Steve is well within loaded chunks, the game finds ways to lag out. -_- Amusingly, though, the shitty computers in my school's computer lab run the in-browser version of Minecraft like a charm.

with a good computer, it doesn't matter, you need RAM for it to run smoothly.

Relocate more RAM to MC. Make sure you're using 64-bit java. Get Optifine. Use Java 7. Make sure your graphics card is decent. The number of cores and GHz your processor has can definitely improve the game. You might've hopped over a few of those things.

I'll look into these when I get home. I should have tried allowing more ram for Minecraft in the first place. Thanks for the ideas!

Also, I use a cracked client. Could this have anything to do with it? I'm buying Minecraft on Saturday, so if I can't fix anything for the client I am using right now I can wait a few days when I have the full one.

Thanks, that mod worked well! I also set up 64 bit Java and set the priority to "High". I changed the autosave option in the settings to every 30 minutes, so now it doesn't lag out every 20 seconds! I changed a few other options, but now I can change the render distance to far and it doesn't lag at all!
