It's an old video. In any case, they can only technically infiltrate, it's unlikely since they don't spawn where it is well lit. They'd have to spawn outside, follow downstairs, and to get to the tower go down that path to a well lit spiraling area up to the tower space itself.

This is what I did for one of my first houses.

I built it out of sand, and for barriers I'd have a 5 block down water moat with cactus and cobble blocking off everything.

maybe something like fountains, lava disposal blocks, hot tubs or stuff like that, I geus. My house is kinda like an inn. I charge people gold to stay the night ans stuff.

well i saw a few cool things like cactus houses and sand pyramids utilizing torches so i did them and the combined them to have a sand pyramid on top of a two story cactus house which was awesome only problem was wen a creeper fell in the lava moat i dug around it but blew up anyway cause i was too closeand took out one single piece of sand under a cactus
the whole thing caved in

You say above ground, but I suggest finding a big body of water and building a ship (still technically above ground). That way, monsters on the mainland don't sneak up on you. If you make it big enough, you can craft spawn eggs even and make farms in it. You'll have to have a good form of transport to the mainland to mine regularly (unless you make an artificial mineshaft through the water to the ground), but you can basically cover everything else with crafting and just a few trips during the building process. But, if you make it big enough and the right way, you can farm, grow trees, raise animals, and even mine in and very close to your ship. And, most importantly, stuff won't sneak up on you. Unless you don't light the area well, but that's obvious.

I'm planning on doing this very soon in one of my saves. I might post a couple updates on how it's doing (not that anyone cares).
