Sega ends last week and starts this one with a bang for the Phantasy Star Online faithful. Now that they've whet your appetite with gameplay footage, Sega tops it off with confirmation that Phantasy Online 2 will be free-to-play on both PC and PlayStation Vita. As in no monthly subscription fee to log in, but as you suspected, the game will supported by microtransactions.
Producer Satoshi Sakai delivers the welcome news at Sega's media brief earlier this morning in Japan, where he also revealed Apple iOS and Android smartphone versions of PSO2. There won't be straight ports, and are instead designed to be more "casual" social titles but they will in some way support avatar data from the PC and PS Vita versions.
Still in closed beta, the PC version of PSO2 is scheduled to go live for public consumption later this summer, followed by the smartphone titles during fall. The PS Vita port meanwhile won't be due until next year.
