Gargoyles

These things are really starting to annoy me. It doesn't even really feel that hard of a boss fight, but I just can't seem to do it. Once the second one comes into play I'm screwed because he just sits back and breathes fire at me and it's like impossible to defend. About ready to rage quit unless someone can give me some useful tips!

Solaire's sign is just before the door, and if you save him from his cell, Lautrec's sign will also be around (up the first ladder (Solaire/door is up ladder #2), turn around, tread on some narrow bits of floor). You can summon both at once, however summoning players or NPCs requires you to Reverse Hollowing and become human. Or else you can't see the signs. It's why you'll generally see a ton of "Try Humanity" notes left by players before a boss door.

I did the same thing Aura mentioned, using Solaire/Lautrec as bait, and attacking whichever one they didn't go near (the second one every time). The gargoyles are actually fairly squishy, and the fire one is easily dodged when he's alone, which makes the fight manageable. If your weapon isn't feeling up to par, the Battle Axe, or another higher damage weapon from Andre the Blacksmith could help out.

Alternatively, to do it solo, smack down the first one as low as you can before the second one approaches and actually starts getting mad. From then on, play ring around the rosie. Coax #2 so it breathes in a stupid direction, and take that time to get a couple good smacks on whichever gargoyle seems more vulnerable.

You can cut off the tail of one of them for an axe, think it requires like, ~25% of their total health bar in damage to the tail? Not sure, didn't try for it. You find more of them later on the game, so it's not a "now or never" deal.

Fire is...defend-able...technically, you'd have to check the stats on shields you've acquired to see if any are actually decent at defending against it though. For this fight it's much, much more reliable to simply work on dodging it.

Great work Chelskiman! Practice make perfect! The thing is that at least early on most armor isn't good enough to sustain the damage so it is better to be fast and not get hit at all:-)

Yeah, I figured that out in the end. Most, if not all, early bosses can one hit kill you (and if they don't you're all but dead anyway) so you may as well sacrafice that little bit of protection for maximum speed.

Currently having a few issues with Havel The Rock, but I just put this down to me sucking at this game and not being able to dodge quick enough, haha. His strikes are very powerful though.

Havel the Rock is in an optional direction, you don't actually need to fight him ever, but his gear is nice if you have a ton of equip load or don't mind the fat-man roll. Or you're in a fight where super-high defense/poise is a must I guess. The last time I beat him without actually having a shield good enough to be effective there, I played the circle-strafe game. Mostly he was using an overhead-swing straight down, which meant while he was in the animation and unable to maneuver, free backstab. Just ran in circle around him until he did it and then punished him for it. Keeping just far enough away where if he swung in any other manner, one roll backward could bring me to safety.

I still can't parry or dodge through attacks for the life of me, don't worry, you're not the only one who fails at this game

Yeah, Havel is a bit of a challenge since he will destroy you most likely in one hit if you take him on early. You can both parry him (i haven't tried that myself yet) and backstab him so it works well. I you go for parrying I suggest you spend some time in the burg learning the timings of parrying, since if you miss it with Havel you die.

Parrying is a very useful skill and there are some parrying guides to view on Youtube. You can't do it on everything, but Black Knights are parryable for example, but if missed they most likely kill you.....

I think PerkoApple is very right in his advice, see every defeat as a learning experience and when things get to tough, take a rest from the game.
