Dual crossbow sounds interesting, that might actually be worth trying with two Avelyns (3-shot crossbow), but you'd need to get to the Duke's Archives before obtaining the first.

Is there a particular reason you're trying to cut the tail off, as opposed to just shooting it off? Seems like a lot of effort for a weapon that loses its effectiveness by the time you have access to the slugs in the swamp area of Blighttown.

That would be the place, the Avelyn is on top of one of the bookshelves, which you can only access by dropping down from one of the rotating staircases - while they're rotating.

The hellkite is a punk. Unlike the Demons Souls dragons the hellkite actually will not follow a set pattern. His attacks are random and you aren't going to be able to use run-timing like you could in Demons Souls.
This means if you start sprinting down the bridge the stupid mofo has a 1/5 chance (on my own deaths estimate) of burning you before you get to the midway point. That said, I run anyway. What I do is unequip all armor and weapons, keep the shield on, and spring for my life straight down the middle and to the right or left and try to hide. If I survive being toasted then I put my gear back on and peek out into kite's field of vision. I bait him into attacking, and if all he does is breath fire I hide again in safety. Once in a while he'll get bored and actually jump down and investigate. As soon as the sucker jumps down, haul ass right through his legs and into the next room and to your right, where the broken warrior of sunlight altar is. Wait for derpface to fly away and you can activate the bonfire in safety. Last four times I tried this I wasn't burned to a crips before getting to the halfway point. Probably means i'm toast the next time I try it.

I've only ever fought him 1 to 1 once on my newgame+ max level character. Slashed the crap out of his legs with the scythe+10. Tried it again on a level 20.... WTFBBQ...

Yep, if you hit him with an arrow from the mid point he will always jump down after rolling up his sleeves and poppin' a can of spinach. If you hit him with an arrow from further away it'll do no damage (even though there's a blood splatter), and he just sits there like "wut?"
