new to battlefield

Alright, well I'm no expert, but I'll tell you what I know to be successful in this game.

1. This isn't Call of Duty!
Don't go running around the map like a chicken with your head cut off, you'll get lit up so many times you'll hate the game. Stick with your team mates, work as a Squad, it makes the game much more enjoyable.

2. First time playing?...
I recommend using the Assault/Medic class. It's the most accessible and the guns are easier to handle.

3. Play Team Deathmatch to get used to the game...
With no objective to worry about, and maps that have been shrunk down to playable size for a Deathmatch, it's the best way to familiarize yourself with the basics.

Basically, I'll elaborate a bit on my first point more because it's the most important in a Battlefield game. This game plays more like a Sim Shooter, which is more realistic and feels more like real war would (although in no way identical). Call of Duty is an Arcade shooter and although guns are based off of real weapons, it isn't realistic at all, and is more of a Lone Wolf game. In Battlefield it is of the highest importance that you stick with your Squad. Running around and trying to go "Lone Wolf" in this game simply doesn't work that well. Use cover blah blah.

Not with the new patch. They're useless now.

At least the Thermal Optics on Tank's didn't get nerfed like the patch notes said
