Ultimate Gear

Ultimately, the best gear for any build in the game is crafted. Dreadscale is the highest tier 'base' armour component, so mastercrafting that with a load of great support components would result in the 'ultimate Rogue set', far exceeding anything looted in the game. The Dreadscale itself isn't as good as some of the armour from sets/loot, but the bonuses you can apply to it through the crafting process can make it far superior to anything else.


If we're ignoring crafting here however, and choosing between the gold sets/purple pieces of Rogue armour available, I don't think there's a 'stand-out victor', and it would partially depend on your build, weapon choice and general play-style as to what would suit you best; some armour pieces having damage bonuses for Bows, stealth, poison, +points to Finesse abilities etc etc, so it depends on what you need.

In terms of the highest armour value available, I believe the 'purple' items of Rogue armour from the Teeth of Naros DLC come top, though the additional bonuses that they give you aren't that spectacular. Both Gold sets from Teeth of Naros are high in armour rating too, though again, the bonuses are fairly average. In the main game, it's the 'Ascendant' and 'Magnon' sets that have the highest armour value's, albeit less than the ToN ones, but I think their bonuses are superior personally. Furthermore, there are 2 'groups' of 'purple' Rogue armour from the main game that have some great bonuses on too.

Individually the better 'purple' pieces are better than the 'golds', but some of the gold set bonuses can be very beneficial, so that kinda evens them up overall. Often, the gold sets don't provide an additional bonus for wearing all 5 pieces of the set; Ascendent and Magnon being examples of which only go up to 4, so in those cases, using one 'purple' would likely be superior in place of the 5th set item. In the case of the 'Justice' set, the best bonus it gives is likely the +25% damage Resistance which only requires 2 pieces of the set to be worn to acquire, so perhaps choosing the 2 best bits of that and then using 3 of something else in that case would be best...

So (aside from crafting), I don't think there is a definitive answer, as it would come down to what would benefit each build specifically best, and there's certainly quite a range of options to choose from
