Miller Leaves JLA?
Director rumored to have parted ways with film.


UK, December 2, 2008 - There's a rumor going round that originated on Dark Horizons, that director George Miller has now left the Justice League of America movie.

They report that the Australian film-maker told a Sydney-based talk show that he is no longer involved in DC Comics' super-hero mash-up.

He is quoted as saying that if the movie does get going again, it will be recast as "the studios seem to want bigger stars in their superhero movies now."

The movie has been beset by production problems ever since its inception, and so the news - if true – will come as no surprise to many.

CHUD, however, disputes the story, with their sources claiming that Miller might not have even appeared on the show in question.

With Marvel's The Avengers now the third highest-grossing domestic release of all time (bumping DC's The Dark Knight from that spot), Warner Bros. is reportedly breathing new life into their long-dormant Justice League of America movie.

Variety reports Castle vet Will Beall is penning the new JLA script for the studio, who has previously hired him for Gangster Squad, the Logan's Run remake and the Lethal Weapon reboot. Beall, a former LAPD officer, hasn't turned in his JLA script yet.

The trade claims, though, that JLA isn't in reaction to Avengers as the studio had begun reinvigorating the project in anticipation of the Marvel epic's release.

You will recall that Justice League almost went before cameras a few years ago with George Miller directing and then-unknown Armie Hammer as Batman, Common as Green Lantern, D.J. Cotrona as Superman and Adam Brody as Flash.

I still shudder when I see that original cast list.

If I was the one making decisions... just a few things....

Set it up like a Bond movie. The team is already together. First scene finishes a mission before leading into the main story. That's right, already together. Not being put together. Not go through origins. For the most part these characters are either so ingrained or so iconic (or barring that so straightforward) there is no real need to do the origin story of everyone before doing a film. Do the League first, then spin off individual flicks.

Which League? The big 7... plus 1.

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Flash, Aquaman..... and Captain Marvel (ye old SHAZAM!).

Cast for the heroes?

Depending on Man of Steel, possibly keep Cavill. For Batman, my first pick Jim Caveziel. Wonder Woman? Maggie Q. GL? Keep Ryan Reynolds. Manhunter? Laurence Fishburne. Flash? Jensen Ackles. Aquaman? Viggo Mortensen And Captain Marvel? Brendan Fraser, after all who else can pull off superhero who is a kid's mind in an adult's body?

The plot? New World Order. The initial arc from Morrison and Porter's JLA run. A new superteam arrives replacing the League as media darlings as they are fixing the world's problems. Turns out it's the first step of an invasion by white Martians... all possessing the same powers as the Martian Manhunter (telepathy, super strength, flight, speed, invulnerability, shape shifting, invisibility, etc.) , only difference is he's the last of his race, they are still packing numbers.

Why that Morrison arc? Quite a few reasons but it had two things going on in the story structure that lend itself well to film. The first was the team having to break up into smaller groups to deal with a threat. The second was everyone getting a chance to shine and show off what they can do, be it the Flash running a race around the world and then punching someone as strong as Superman from North America to Africa or Batman figuring out what was going on and turning the tables.

Ego is too big. He'd want to play as Superman.

This just seems like it will turn into a mess. Christan Bale isnt going to play Batman, not sure if Henry Cavill will be Superman (still waiting to see how man of steel turns out) and no info/backstory/movie for wonder woman and the flash. Unlike how the avengers did it.

Don't get your jimmies rustled on the news of Affleck possibly being the director. I'm totally cool with it, as I explained in the comics forum. Affleck is certainly capable of directing good films (see: Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and upcoming Argo)

I compared Affleck's position on this to Nolan taking over Batman [insert The Living Angelus "nolanfanboy" rant]. At the time that Nolan took over, he had only directed 3 films - all of them being good movies (though, some will argue with Insomnia, and I'd kind of agree). Look what he did with Batman, especially without having all the experience Affleck has gathered while on the set of many other directors' films. Affleck definitely has some talent, and I'm sort of excited by this.
