I've honestly never liked the guy. Ridiculous secret identity cover-up, near impossible to take down (though people seem to have an abundance of kryptonite laying around), just punches things (though he knows how to fight now, thanks to a fellow superhero), and seems like a robot at times. Granted he's winning me over with his recent changes and styles (DCU:O, loving it), but eh, not like these films are helping much.

I can vouch a bit about that, BrokenKnights. Keep in mind that Lois has been in danger many times before, she's been the damsel in distress before Superman could do anything. If he's distracted with other matters, she can easily be taken. Let's not forget that Lois isn't the only one he cares about. Jimmy's one of his closest buddies, Lana's a trustworthy long-time friend, and then there's his family, such as Kara. I understand the need for the identity, with all he has going on. As fast as he is, he can't be there all the time, he's often got his hands tied. Regardless, it's a silly cover-up. xD

I can see where people are coming from. In terms of depth of a character and general diversity, Superman pales in comparison to the likes of Batman or Spiderman.

Batman is haunted by his parent's death and struggles with following his rules and morals even with villains like Joker who push him to that line every time. He is also more relatable character because he is human and can be hurt, unlike the god-like invincible Superman. Of course Spiderman deals with the burden of his Uncle's death and having his life as Spiderman destroy his life as Peter Parker. And while he has powers, he can bleed and be hurt.

Hell, just about every superhero is built around a tragedy or a struggle. Hulk, X-Men, Green Lantern, Fantastic Four, Daredevil etc... Only thing with Superman is being a "God among men" or the "Last of my kind" which are kind of weak. Death of Superman is probably one of the more popular stories of Superman because it turned him human as he fought in a brutal deathmatch with Doomsday. It's powerful imagery to see Lois Lane hold a broken Superman in her arms while she cries.

But I'm not as endowed with knowledge of Superman as much as others so I'm sure Mac would have better insight than me.



That being said, I will still see this movie and am looking forward to a new direction with it.

Spider-Man's motto from Uncle Ben applies well to Superman, that with great power comes great responisbility. Doesn't need to be a debate about that, Superman does have an image to uphold. Needless to say, all the heroes do, but see what differentiates Superman is his powers. His history is sorrowful, sure, but his powers just seem so overwhelming. I don't know, I just don't feel as much character with Superman as I would with other heroes. I know he's quite redeeming, a great heroic figure, but it feels too cliche and worn out to me. I suppose I like seeing more character flaws and struggles.

Again, not saying Supes doesn't go through hell and back, but I just prefer other characters.

Just read what walnuts posted. As far as the planet bit is concerned...I don't know about that. Not to sound heartless or anything, but Superman was merely a baby when his home planet was destroyed. As far as he knew, he was like the other humans, withe some extra gifts of course. It's like me with my grandparents. I hardly knew them, they died young, and with that, I didn't mourn for them. That sounds heartless, sure, but I mean, I barely visited or knew them well, was very young when I saw them. But compare that to Bruce who witnessed his parents, literally witnessed them get killed in front of him, and Peter who had his uncle, someone who was a father-figure most of his life, die with him nearby...it's definitely not as deep as those two characters. And you mentioned that the near extinction of his species being deep as anything that occurs with Spidey or Bats. That's also debatable, as their hardships are much different than the extinction scenario. Spider-Man's sacrifices have been incredible, heartful...I don't know how this guys stays as wise-cracking as he is with all he's been through, honestly. Batman's been broken before, he's gone through levels of insanity, being absorbed completely by his persona (Zur-en-arrh)...his struggles have been well-known. Yes, Supes has his struggles too, but I'm just more drawn to the two mentioned characters.

Alice Eve (She's Out of your League), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds) and Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day) were all reported this week to be up for the role. And now Latino Review has the scoop that "The character these lovely actresses have come out for is none other than a Kryptonian villainess who is going by the name of URSA." Sound familiar?

Ursa doesn't sound like they're trying too hard to make this too cerebral. But I guess that went out the door with Zach Snyder. I'm sure a 300-esque Superman movie (visually stunning with plot taking a bit of a backseat), would be a good move for the movie franchise. Not where I'd personally want to see it going, but better than any of the others, so w/e.

February 21, 2011 - Deadline reports Kevin Costner is up for a part in Zack Snyder's Superman reboot. Latino Review reports that Kevin Costner would play Jonathan ‘Pa’ Kent.

The potential role is unknown at this stage though some age-appropriate speculation could place Costner as Perry White, Jonathan Kent or General Sam Lane (Lois' father), among others.

Some positive news given that the last few I've read have all been negative. Problems with the third act, bashing of Snyder (which has to do with Sucker Punch mainly). Typical hating before a film is even out. I'm still remaining optimistic Snyder can pull out another hit.
