Before I even commented on the video... the very first thing I did was start researching it. I wanted to know what it was I was watching before throwing my two cents around. Took me all but five minutes or so to finally get a definite answer and I was one of the first people on here to say it's a short film for a proposed movie. More research as the days went on and I came upon the link with the director himself.

I say stupid because it packs that more dramatic punch into drilling home my point. =P The verbal exclamation mark so to speak. You had some and still do all over the place (Oldies forum, IMDb) ranting on about the lack of mysticism or changing the characters. Have they though? I mean, if they were going to reboot this, rather than a MK3 that's silly and just another DB:E, this, this is how I would want a remake to look. It's different from what we've had through 2 movies and a TV show, it's still the MK name and characters, just they're different. They're grounded and more realistic. It's a remake. A hard, R-rated remake. They didn't add in an "Alice" type character ala Resident Evil (and I'd be perfectly fine with those films if it wasn't for Milla Jovovich's character; I liked RE1 and only started hating the film series once she went toe-to-toe against the Nemesis and became a superchick), they didn't remove the tournament altogether, the focal point of the MK games nor did they cop-out and just say these people are all science experiments gone wrong ala Doom that's why Reptile looks deformed, and the virus makes him crave human flesh. The director clearly stated in that article I posted in this thread he has no intent of taking out the mysticism, it's just that it would be more grounded and not over-the-top silly. Scorpion himself had a bit of that supernatural charm to him in the short film. It was more subtle and not "I can shoot fire from my eyes as a fatality, here watch" in your face exploited. That bit with the handcuffs and his dialogue was sweet. They're basically saying he's a supernatural character without saying he's a supernatural character. lol

Concerns your more than welcome to have, but to continuously bash a short-film like some did because it didn't focus on and showcase fireball-like Hadoukens and giant green skulls being conjured up and shown flying across the screen is silly, or stupid, or any other adjective of the same meaning. Because again, some people should do just a little, not much, just a little more research before spouting off through their keyboard to avoid these embarrassing situations. The budget was limited, self-funded and outside of studio approval to shoot this project. It was simply to show the studio that here's what a hard, R-rated MK movie could look like, which is why they showed the fight scene and the graphic bit with Reptile. They wanted to showcase the gore and the violence. The stuff that made the original MK so damn controversial and popular. That scene with Johnny Cage where he smoked the cigar... he knew he was going to die, which is why he had a final smoke and that bit with the blood being exhaled was a nice addition. That's the kind of stuff and little touches to the movie I'd like to see make it into a feature film. It didn't hold back on the gore and violence. Had it been studio supported and given a proper budget, going off that article, I'm more than positive they would have thrown in a bit of that mysticism in there to please the minority who hated it. With that extra money, they probably would have shown the decapitation itself and not done a cut-away shot from it to a photo of his headless corpse (which still was a nice touch too).

It's our criticism which will help make a better movie in the end, if one does get made. I myself didn't care much for Baraka's appearance and the director is more than aware the reception Baraka got. Personally, I'd replace Baraka with Kabal, remove the forearm blades and just give him some self custom knives and call it square. Oh and make him far more hideously ugly to the point it's revolting through his self-mutilation where he has to wear a custom respirator mask ala Kabal and Darth Vader. Keep the same backstory though. Then if he was intent on putting Baraka in (no Outworld, this is grounded remember), I'd just have some guy from a third-world country (eh, eh?) who looked like Sloth from the Goonies but more deformed and similar to Baraka's facial structure who had a psychotic, strict and abusive mother (how he got so deformed and mentally unstable). He ended up becoming a nutjob and a serial killer ala the real life person Ed Gein, sharpened his teeth and attached blades to his arm via surgery or by creating some type of mechanical glove device. That would be my explanation for Baraka to appear in this film.

Funny that on another site people undertsood why I don't like the look of the MK promo.Like here, most of them love the look of the promo and hope that does end up being the MK movie.But no one there accused me of being an idiot for having a different opinion to everyone else.


The only thing that I really did wrong was not say that I understand that the promo likely won't be the movie.BUT if the promo doesn end up being the movie, I will not watch it because it doesn't suit my tastes as to what I thhink makes MK.

Thank you. Someone who seems to understands where I'm coming from when I state my reasons for not liking the look of the promo.Though honestly only one person here refuses to accept my reasons for not liking the promo.Or at least only one person has come forward and flat out bashed my opinions.

So what.Just because it is a promo only and likely not the final movie, that does NOT mean that we can't pick apart the vid and state why we would not watch the movie IF it ends up being the movie.If that was the case then all speculation should be banned from the site as all I was doing was speculating on how crappy I think the movie would be IF it ended up being the real MK movie.



Again not pointing out that I understand that this promo is likely not going to be the final movie was a mistake but leaving out that point doesn't make my opinions any less valid.Again, for MY tastes, not anyone elses.

Gamesta100, I believe a lot of the problem here is not your opinion, but the way you're going about your opinion. You're remaining in a single-minded mindset throwing around words like "crap" -- the promo was not crap whatsoever, by any stretch of opinion, and your adamancy against it is the problem. Members like BullFish have relayed opinions that mirror yours, but at the same time they look to what could happen and could be; while there's very little mysticism in there already, the director has already confirmed there will be.

Let me ask you what you genuinely think makes Mortal Kombat, after I've told you what I think. I think gore makes it. Tick. I think explosive characters make it. Tick. I think overworldly abilities make it, and I'm fairly sure I saw a dude with no eyes, a dude who can survive a condition that kills in two weeks and someone jumping off walls. Tick. Heck, you could even argue there was two fatalities in there. Tick there. A collation of the worlds best fighters? Tick.

I personally have never seen the Mortal Kombat series for its glowing green skulls. Admittedly a core foundation of gameplay comes down to projectiles that are very mystic, but you're also ignoring the only characters we've seen. Johhny Cage and Baraka. Johnny Cage's fights are defined by his kicks, and I'm fairly sure we saw one of his trademark moves replicated in the film (a slightly less over-the-top Shadow Kick, possibly?). Baraka jumps around the walls and has blades in his arms: this adaptation agrees. We have not yet seen Sub-Zero fight, and how he's presented is yet to be seen, and this applies to the rest of the characters. Did you see Sub-Zero in the flashback? Dude had ridiculous shit on his face, I definitely think we're going to see some science fiction explanation of how he can use ice to his advantage -- otherworldly. Furthermore, dude, did you not see Scorpion? The only character that could have possibly exhibited supernatural elements so far, and he already has done.

So chill out, sit down, get over the fact there might not be other Realms and accept that criticism like "crap" will get you into trouble, because it's not your opinions that are a problem, but instead your whole mentality.

Hopefully this movie will have realism at first then as the film goes on, theres more and more hints of the supernatural and mystic afoot then at the end of the film the movie pretty much confirms it for you...roll on a possible sequel.

Something like a notable good guy in the story turns out to be Shang Tsung after the audience would believe it was all realistic and that Shang Tsung was just some mob boss type running this tournament and instead he is really a supernatural being like in the games.

They can kinda play with the origins a bit too since they weren't really too much explored apart from a sentence or two in one of the games...like how Kano got that metal place on his face. Have him start off with a perfectly normal face then a notable MK character mutiliates him.

OMFG Gamesta how long are you gonna be a douche and argue your point? no matter how long you do youre not gonna sway anyone to your way of thinking, so just stop already.

Mortal Kombat should have died in the 90's. The games have never been that good so the only real popularity it garnered was gimmicky, based entirely on violence (it sure as hell wasn't the gameplay). I'm not denying Mortal Kombat's place in video game history but really, what is so compelling about that mythos other than violence? If you see the Penny Arcade comic related to this short, it kind of matches my own disinterest. You're taking a series that has always been laughable, B-movie at best, and trying to make it this hardcore gore fest, SAW with kung-fu fighting or somesuch . . . not buying it. Why not have Ridley Scott direct a Legend of Zelda movie while we're at it? This isn't my cup of tea but I do have to say, the director is clearly a fan and definitely seems like the right guy to make a serious film. To fans of this idea, if he gets the nod, I'd say you're in good hands and should look forward to the film.

Dude, the last generation MK games had awesome combat. I'll give you credit with the earlier titles sucking a little bit even if I enjoyed them, but there was bugger all wrong with Deadly Alliance/Deception/Armageddon.

He later stated that he thought it was "incredibly well done" and that it was "a legitimate alternate universe Mortal Kombat".

As of August, both the pitch and the YouTube account that uploaded it (MortalKombatRebirth) have been taken off of YouTube.

So, looks like it wasn't a pitch for a film, it was just a cool looking middle finger to those waiting for one.
