Was digital video not invented for this progression from 24fps to match higher HD specs? Surely watching The Hobbit shot at 24fps would create visual problems in the movement of shots being blurred and unwanted artefacts cropping up when put out in 1080 HD. Where'as the Hobbit as shot at 48fps will just enhance clarity and movement. It's just tailored to fit the new specs. Casablanca's pan shots in 1080p are not a nice thing to see, motion judder is a huge issue. It's just a case of whether you find the look of shooting at 24fps is important to your film or not, in this case, Jackson is going for the most lifelike movement and clarity he can bring to this fantasy world.

He talks about how it looks like 'normal speed' but is smoother and more pristine as an image. Where'as someone like David Lynch is opposed to having everything be crystal clear in his footage and prefers to use the blur and artefacts as a creative tool and as part of the aesthetic of the image.

It was always going to be two. The "at least" part has me on edge though. That would be a poor move.

Gumdrop Fields

I really don't think the Hobbit needs to be more than 2 films. If they could create 1 film for each of the books in the trilogy I don't see how they could possibly need more than 2 films for the Hobbit. Admittedly it's been a while since I read the Hobbit, but I recall it being far shorter than any of the Lord of the Rings books.
Assuming the films are going to be pretty long, I would be curious as to how they actually expect to drag this story out into more than 2 films. Technically they probably could have made the story into 1 film, but if they make it into 2 so they can focus on certain things more then all the better. Not so sure I see the point in 3 films though.

are they really doing 3 now? i only heard it would be this one and then There And Back Again as the second one. the Hobbit is the same length as the other 3 books, so they could fit it all into a 4-ish hour movie, but they would have to cut things like they had to cut from LOTR. such as Tom Bombadil's whole involvement or Glorfindel showing up. he saved Frodo, not Arwen. he was a bawss.

Things on this production keep getting weirder and weirder.

wonder if PJ would consider a movie or movies based on the Silmarillion or some of the lesser known Tolkien stories.

well i was thinking like have part of Silmarillion tacked onto the front of something else that explains about Iluvatar, the Ainur, Valar etc and how Arda came to be, then maybe go to one of the stories within Sil or one of the other stand alone books. could name it after the History of Middle Earth series. but yeah they are so totally epic.
