At least we get 2 movies out of the wait though I'm dying to know what sort of stuff they will cover in the second linking film. I'm thinking that it'll most likely be how Gollum gets captured by Mordor, Frodo being adopted and that sort of thing.

Hopefully not. I would think they will come up with something original. Although they may end up with something referring it as the prequel to LOTR. But we won't know until they announce it...obviously

well they can for sure use McKellan as Gandalf, thats a no brainer. however Ian Holm is getting too old to reprise Bilbo, especially a younger Bilbo. even though they showed a scene of him in ROTK finding the Ring, theyre gonna have to no doubt get someone else.

oh and Andy Serkis as Gollum of course. those 3 would be the only 3 characters who are also in Hobbit, right (Gollum, Gandalf and Bilbo)? i havent read Hobbit in quite a while but Gimli wasnt one of the dwarves who came with Gandalf, so those are the only characters that would be actor-sensitive. they could also just paste Ian Holm's face onto another actor in case he is too old to be in scenes.

oh Elrond was? that figures. anyway, the extras used for Bilbo's birthday scene wouldnt be crucial since you dont see them on screen very much.

April 30, 2008 - Director Guillermo del Toro mentioned a few days ago that he had had a meeting with Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis for them to reprise their roles in The Hobbit and its sequel as Gandalf and Gollum/Smeagol, respectively. Now we get to hear McKellen's side.

"Yes, it's true," McKellen told Empire Online at the UK Speed Racer premiere. "I spoke to Guillermo in the very room that Peter Jackson offered me the part and he confirmed that I would be reprising the role. Obviously, it's not a part that you turn down, I loved playing Gandalf."

He added that "Guillermo will be getting around to starting the script in about six weeks when he's finished filming Hellboy II."
