Why didn't the 'Space Jockey' end up dying in the seat of its ship where he was found in the original Alien movie? I thought that image was the whole basis of Prometheus. There were too many human bodies lying around the area too to have not been noticed by the Nostromo crew. Why did we get a more humanoid version of the Xenomorph in the final scene? I hate sequel-bait.

Maybe the Space Jockeys came back to investigate and there was a stowaway facehugger.

I saw this film this afternoon and thought it was great. Bear in mind I went in without seeing any of the other movies, so it was all brand new for me. Whether that enabled me to enjoy it more, I don't know, but I enjoyed it a lot. Idris Elba was fantastic for mine, in fact, all of them were, really strong cast. An engaging storyline with plenty of twists and turns to keep me interested.

Also, Noomi Rapace is easy on the eye, just a fyi

The withholding thing is a big problem for me. Sorry Lindelof, you can fool me once by throwing a bunch of shit on a wall and expecting me to think it's good because I have to ponder the symbolism on my own. In a one sitting two hour viewing though? No thanks.

Ebert praised it for that choose-your-own-meaning style and I can see many others in this thread doing the same. That's definitely in line with movie's outlook, thinking back to the glimpse into Shaw's childhood. The meaning I choose to follow is that I left the theater with almost nothing except for pretty looking scenery. I think that blog analysis is a lot of hot air. This movie doesn't get to take credit for wrapping the Jesus story into its mythology based on a couple open ended clues and producer comments.

David was the most fascinating character and I really couldn't tell where he was coming from by the end. It seemed like he wanted to stow away the pregnant Shaw in cryostasis like Burke in Aliens intended to, but then shortly after it was revealed that Vickers Sr. was on board and David was serving him. There were moments where he seemed to be doing things exclusively for himself, then others where he just wanted to understand humanity. Why he decided to help out Shaw near the end was beyond me.

Besides from the excellent first ten minutes (empty planet, engineer dissolving into human life, followed by David playing basketball and watching movies during the stasis wait), other highlights were Captain Janek and that badass final act from him.

The only thing that put me off more than this senseless chain of alien births was the fact that Shaw gave herself a C-section with the voice activated robot surgeon, got hastily stapled up and then was sprinting all over the place shortly after. I was actually laughing during much of that.

I'd obviously want to see where the engineers came from and hear some of these much-touted 'answers' (which a 50 million dollar weekend certainly suggests may happen) but if there are any more deliberate tie ins to Alien's set design I'm gonna have to bail. That last scene was so infuriating.

Also lastly, I'd put out the question of whether this movie believes in evolution, at least when it comes to where humans came from.

Was the movie good? A must see?

Frankly that sort of movie is usually *bleep*ing boring (outside wanting a tune out 'popcorn flick'). I like being left to form my own conclusions. No because that is irrelevant, the creature was a tool of suspense. I went into this knowing what it was (ie set in Alien universe but not an Alien movie per se) but with no other preconceptions. In that way I didn't care what it explained about the xenomorphs or anything like that. It was already a stand alone film for my mind. With that in mind I watched it as a commentary on humanity and human nature. The characters were simply representations of our various extremes and David was the juxtoposition to give it all scope.

As for the ending and leaving questions unanswered. It's not the first film to do that. It's not going to be the last. And it sure as hell didn't do it badly. Plenty of films over the years have left similar feelings in viewers and be praised to high hell. I think people are just watching this with a different expectation. One that is, for me, unrealistic.[/div]

Well who is to say that the genetic make-up that fell into the water wasn't a species like us, but evolved into us? All they said was that particular installation was abandoned 2000 years ago. So it's not that they don't believe in evolution, but never explained how we came to be. Whether it was from their genetic make-up or a test-tube.

To be honest I thought it was reasonably clear that the Engineers were 'life seeders' of the universe. They'd go around and seed life with that black liquid. Clearly humanity went wrong at some point and they didn't like that particular outcome and wanted to either erase it or reset it. As for believing in evolution. As you say, it's unexplained; but does it really matter? We came from them, and are them genetically. That's the important fact. That our creator was simply another race of normal carbon based beings, and not some omnipotent cloud being with a beard and a penchant for infanticide.

I saw this just now. Ridely Scott truly is a master at sci-fi. The imagery he creates is so fantastic.

As for the story? It is hard for me to wrap my head around, honestly. May have to go back for more to get it better.
