It was all a dream. Right after Leo's trying out that powerful ass sedative for the first time and he goes in the bathroom he sees something which reminds him of the window (flashbacks he only has when something tied to his memory triggers it in a dream). He then tries to spin the top but drops it on the sink then gets distracted by Saito. You never see him spit the top again in the waking world.

Nevermind the fact that it's amiguous enough for a person to get what he/she wants out of it....

or to be as pissed off as you want to be about it.

Maybe the reactions say more about the individual than the film. Maybe not.

I'm glad it was what it was and enjoyed it as opposed to something like say Sixth Sense where almost everything relies on the suspense leading up to the reveal which made it a "watch once and be done" for me. Inception I'll be able to see more than once.

But I seriously doubt back to back viewings will ever happen.

I didn't think this movie needed a "twist" in the Sixth Sense sense of the word. It certainly wasn't building to a twist - the biggest plot relevant "reveal" they could've had was the kick in the no-gravity hotel, but that was delivered on a very lackluster level. And this spinning top at the end became the pay-off in order to get people to think they need to watch the movie again. When, in fact, you can get everything the first time around (or at least the plot/character relevant stuff you need in order to answer the question "Was all of that real or not?" or "Is he stuck in limbo or not?").

Times where twists work are when its mainlined straight into the plot like Fight Club or Memento. The first time I saw both of those movies I looped the DVD. The twists aren't the last thing that happen, they give you the twist and then whet your appitite for what the implications are.

In any case, I may need to go watch this movie again and turn it off a few minutes before the end and see what my reaction is then.

And sidenote -- of course a person's personal reaction to a movie says more about the person than the movie. I don't like getting jerked around.

Some films implement the creation of suspense/withholding information so masterfully, like with many of Hitchcock's films, that this becomes the greatest thing about repeat viewings. I'll sometimes compare Nolan with said master because of Memento, which is the perfect example of the value you can get from with repeat viewing. When done well that is like Memento, Vertigo etc. I'll give you the Sixth Sense...

I wouldn't grade it so cheaply, you can criticise the scene a lack of true suspense (say Nolan's habit of cross-cutting the hell out of it with hard cuts constantly you don't know when the punch will come in the scene), though I still think it did a great job, the use of parralel timelines is an age old method and is just used more creatively.

Are you instead suggesting Nolan could've withheld telling us about 'the kick' and rather having it be restricted narration, delivering it in the end?

People take from a movie what they want to take from it. I thought it was a fantastic movie because it fully entertained me and the ending was ambiguous enough to at least provoke some thought.

Good to have closure. Now someone just make an "Inception - It was a dream! - Get Over It!" thread so we continue the debate.

Yeah that to me is the entire ending essentially anyway, Caine is trying to say that his character invented 'Inception' and so it could not possibly be a dream if he appears at the end, which he does.
