man its only up to $60 million gross in the US currently. i think thats because it wasnt advertised hugely, and a lot of ppl were iffy about it. i bet once word of mouth goes around that number will start climbing like a mofo.

the whole point is you have to decide for yourself whether the top fell over or not. like someone said, Nolan performed inception on the audience with that. and until a sequel comes out, its up to you to decide if it did or not. i bet it will continue being debated for months or years on, and as a film maker, you want that to happen.

Batman series notwithstanding, Nolan's not really a sequel kind of guy. I doubt this film will grow into a franchise very seriously. We might see some more comics like the one released on the official site last week before the film's release, but I would bet a substantial amount of money this is the one and only Inception movie Nolan's going to make.

Only $60 million? Damn, people's expectations really got rocked by TDK, didn't they? It's only DiCaprio's largest film opening by $19 million...I think that's pretty respectable for a non-sequel, even if it is Nolan and it was PG-13. I'm not sure what expectations were, but this movie's definitely going to have some legs into August. It should make back its $150 million price tag in North America alone by the end of the month.

Once again, I won't say the ending detracted from the film at all, it just limited the scope of its impact for me. Like Saevus, I was expecting something mind-blowing after the way the film was structured, and instead all I got was this Tarantino-esque jump back to the beginning of the movie and a post-modern cop-out of an ending I've seen dozens of times before in Faulkner, Morrison, etc. I like to think about my movies (and this one sure was a treat for the old noggin) but if I'm going to invest that much time in wrestling with the central problem of the movie, don't pretend at the end like it doesn't matter. And I understand the argument from the linked analysis, that the film is about the art of making movies-a very fine interpretation of the flick. But the other film alluded to in the article-Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds-managed to do the exact same thing without hitting the audience with a "this doesn't matter" train (excuse the wording if you've seen the film). We're emotionally invested in the question at that point-give us an answer, or at the very least don't treat us like idiots by toying with the question in the final seconds of the film.

As for JGL as a villain in the next Batman movie-I'll believe that when the Angels win the pennant (SEE WHAT I DID THAR?).

$60.1 is the 8th biggest opening weekend of the year, behind Valentine's Day (on Valentine's Day), Alice and Wonderland (no competition), Clash of the Titans (barely-helped by 3D sales), Iron Man 2, Shrek Forever After, Toy Story 3, and Twilight. I wouldn't say that's too bad, considering it's not a sequel, it has no "niche" audience, and it's not being shown in 3D, hiking up the surcharges. With the possible (did I really say possible at first? Let's go ahead and make that certain-EDIT) exception of Toy Story 3, I think it'll have longer legs than the rest of the movies above as well. If you expected it to do $100 million worth of work in its first weekend, you were riding the Batman hype train. To put things into perspective, the movie made over 4 times as much as The Prestige, Nolan's last non-Batman movie, did in its first weekend.

I understand where people are coming out on this one, but everything I've read suggests that $60.1 was on the higher end of Warner Bros.' predictions. It's an unequivocal success in my book, and it's going to be talked about for awhile. I mean, what's even coming out next week? Salt? I wouldn't be surprised at all if Inception remains atop the box office next weekend, too.

The score will drop down. It's like what happened with The Dark Knight. Everybody got home from the theaters and gave it 10/10 thinking it was the best thing they had ever seen.

Eh, hard to say, both films are too different to really make that call. Superhero fans/comic fans would usually string for TDK (except of course the crazy comic nuts who criticize everything).

Hm, I guess I was downplaying the $60 mil mark a bit. It is definitely a good start. But I don't know, with all the big actors involved, the renowned director, etc., I thought it'd garner more attention. Some people go see films just because their favorite actor is in it (I'm like that with Jackie Chan flicks). I figured the DiCaprio following would be huge. xD

Well I tried reading through that linked article, but the guy sounded kind of arrogant and annoyed me, so I quit halfway. lol


My take on the totems was that if someone else knew the outcome of your totem, you could become stuck in a dream created by them, or in their dream, forever. Not sure why else it would matter if someone else knew how your totem acted.


I think that it could have all been a dream, because think about Limbo. That was COBB'S subconcious! The film says they were in the chemist's, Ellen Page's, and Fischer's minds. But that Limbo is from Cobb's. How would they all wind up there if it wasn't Cobb that was the true and only dreamer?

This is DiCaprio's biggest opening weekend, as strange as that may sound. Before this, it was February's Shutter Island at $40 million. The guy makes fantastic movies, but not 9-figure blockbusters. Titanic made most of its money in the months following its release, and films like Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, etc. were critical darlings but slightly above average grossers.

Memento belongs in the Top 10 on imdb. You want to talk about mind*bleep*s, that movie makes Inception look like a paint by the numbers kit. I've seen that film no fewer than six times and am still seeing things I've missed. Not to mention its ending (while still slightly post-modern) didn't make me want to chuck a lighting fixture through the theater wall.

60 Mill is a bit of a slow start, but this definitely a movie that will pick up over time with word of mouth. I mean throughout the day I over hear people talking about how amazing this movie and recommending it.
